Effort to overturn Monday Igbuya’s impeachment suffers setback

Efforts by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and some other top leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state to overturn the impeachment of the former speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chief Monday Igbuya, has suffered a setback.

The meeting which started immediately Igbuya was impeached when the new assembly leadership went to pay the governor a visit to inform him of the development was held inside the new Government House, Asaba, with top politicians in attendance.

Igbuya, was on Thursday morning impeached by 22 out of the 29 lawmakers and was immediately replaced by the member representing Okpe Constituency, Chief Sheriff Oboriowori.

Also impeached was the Majority Leader, Mr. Tim Owhefere, Isoko North Constituency at a plenary presided over by the deputy Speaker, Mr. Friday Osanebi, which also had in attendance the clerk and sergeant-at-arm.

After they were removed by the lawmakers, Igbuya was handed a three-month suspension while Owhefere was suspended indefinitely.

The State Governor, however, prevailed on the lawmakers to rescind their decision in the meeting that lasted for several hours, but the lawmakers vowed not to overturn the removal of the officers.

The meeting was attended by the impeached speaker, Igbuya, Okowa’s deputy, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro, Chief Steve Oru, former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, commissioners and the chairman of the PDP in the state, Olorogun Kingsley Esiso.

  1. This is legislative business how can okowa be supporting a block head speaker like Igbuya. he is just like a dodo in the house. Nothing has been happening in the past 2years. he can not even push the governor to payup salaries,Pensions and severance allowances which the Paris fund is stipulated for.
