The Senate has passed a resolution directing the Nigerian Customs Service to halt its plan to penalise Nigerians who do not pay duties on their vehicles within one month.
The resolution, on Tuesday, followed a motion by the Deputy Leader, Bala Na’Allah, who said the new Customs policy was “a serious matter”.
In his contribution, Kogi senator, Dino Melaye, said it was not possible to import vehicles without clearance or “collaboration” of the Customs.
The Senate resolved that Customs halt actions until the agency appears before its Committee on Customs.
Senate President Saraki Saraki said it was the responsibility of the senate to ensure the welfare of Nigerians.
Customs had threatened to impound vehicles without duty papers and to prosecute their owners.

ReplyDeleteYou are so foolish.Basket mouth.
DeleteWhat kind of senate is this? They don't want customs to impound vehicles without clearance, even when they know we have many such vehicles, bcos they d senators are guilty of smuggling..how else do want Nigeria to generate revenue. D worst thing that has ever happened to Nigeria is Saraki
ReplyDeletePlease, read about the plans of d customs before u criticise the senate. Custom wants every car in Nigeria, no matter the yr of purchase to go pay for the duty if d duty was not paid at d point of entry into Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteYes stop it but don't back date penalty. Start from any purchase brought in as from 07/03/2017.
ReplyDeleteEnd of.
If your senses are really working, does it make any sense for customs to start apprehending vehicles cleared for many years now to pay any fees? if the customs are coming up with any new policy, it should start from the very first day of the policy been enacted. The senate as a major arm of government is there for proper representation of its constituent from every constituency in Nigeria at large. What customs are doing is not right for any reason whatever. Senate should crate policies to checkmate all this lapses, we are in twenty second century, where are suppose to be practicing world standard polices not opaque. You can’t just wake up as an agency (FRSC, CUSTOM, POLICE, etc) of the government to impose anything that pleases them to extol money from Nigerians in this time of recession. A simple example of this act FRSC is the agency giving out vehicle plate number, suddenly they will just come up with a new story that the plate number they issues has expired and start issuing a new type, from the same office. How long are we going to been living with all this kind of unhealthy attitude, it’s so devastating and callous
ReplyDeleteYou are a real boss Ezomo Jr. You are spot on.
