PSG condemn performance of referee Aytekin in letter to UEFA

Paris Saint-Germain are refusing to let their Champions League frustrations lie, with the performance of referee Deniz Aytekin questioned in a letter sent to UEFA.

The French outfit crashed out of Europe in remarkable fashion at Camp Nou, with a 4-0 first-leg lead surrendered in spectacular style.

PSG entered the encounter as heavy favourites, with Edinson Cavani’s away goal strengthening their position.

There was, however, to be a thrilling finish in Catalonia which saw Barca net three times in the final seven minutes to prevail 6-1 on the night and 6-5 on aggregate.

The awarding of a late penalty for a nudge on Luis Suarez sparked controversy, with the Uruguayan – who had already been booked for diving – going to ground very easily.

PSG had already been denied a spot-kick at the opposite end of the field by that point after seeing Angel Di Maria waved to his feet after tangling with Javier Mascherano.

Reports in Spain have suggested that German official Aytekin is facing demotion by UEFA on the back of his display, with it unlikely that he will take in another Champions League encounter this season.

That is of little consolation to PSG, though, who have decided to raise their complaints in a letter to European football’s governing body.

They are not looking to make excuses, or suggesting in any way that the game should be replayed, but are eager to see their grievances acknowledged.

According to reports, the correspondence has been sent, with the assistance of former referees sought to help highlight the errors made.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has already questioned the performance of the match officials in Le Parisien, saying: “You can’t help but think that the result could’ve been different with more clairvoyant refereeing.

“Everyone saw the penalty on Di Maria, which could’ve allowed us to make it 3-2 and end without doubt with all the suspense, without forgetting that there wasn’t one on Suarez.”

The Qatari businessman took in the Champions League clash at Camp Nou alongside Aleksander Ceferin and will be hoping for answers from the UEFA president.
