Nigerians would have been eating from waste bins if Jonathan had continued – Minister, Usani

The Minister of Niger-Delta Affairs, Mr Usani Uguru Usani, has said that Nigerians have every reason to be grateful to God that President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) took over the administration of the country, maintaining that without the intervention that removed Goodluck Jonathan from power, Nigerians would have been “crawling to eat from the waste bins.”

The minister, who stated this in a chat with The SUN, added that the APC-led federal government has been true to the promises it made to Nigerians before the 2015 general elections.

He said: “You can be sure that I belong to a political party that promised change which has installed the government and that party has a responsibility to talk about the nature of change demanded. I can tell you that as a member of the party and a functionary in government, whoever says they are not being given the change promised has made a mistake. Sometimes you never know what you have until you lose it. If we had not taken the reins of government, by now Nigerians would have been seen crawling to feed from waste bins, you may not understand, but that is the reality.

“The change we promised is that we will no longer depend on oil again, and presently, diversification is taking place. You have seen Lake Rice flooding the market in December that means tending towards food security and agriculture also as a foreign income earner. The change we promised is to see a government functionary being probed and probably prosecuted which hitherto was not the case. The change we promised is, as Nigerians are experiencing hardship, people are also refunding to government what was derived from corrupt practices and you have heard the government say that the budget will be funded in part by these funds that are being refunded.

“Also, when the President was campaigning as a candidate then, he said the economy, anti-corruption and security were going to be his focus. If it doesn’t mean change, to experience that today you can hold league matches in Maiduguri and people will enter the stadium and watch, then, what else can change be? That, 14 local governments were taken as a territory of a sect and now recovered as a sovereign part of a country, is not change? Even if it is only one of the Chibok girls that was rescued, it means an attempt has been made and is yielding results. But you hear many people tell you ‘stop complaining, give us this or that.’ There are consolations to that kind of demand, nobody enjoys hardship, but I tell you that, ‘the change begins with us’ is functioning in government. As ministers, find out how we fare. A lot of us do not have official cars; a lot of us are managing to pay our rents. A lot of us make official trips from our meager private earnings and so what else can change be when we are being exemplary in what we have preached? Nigeria I repeat is being exhumed from its economic grave and it can be nothing better in our present circumstance.

“Nigerians should just be patient, wait and see, I can assure you that before 2019, things will begin to improve. In the petroleum sector, in the past, you have heard percentage increases in fuel and after a while scarcity will necessitate another increase because deregulation was being done in selective manner, but today, proper deregulation has taken place. In December, did you hear about any fuel scarcity? No. This is genuineness in policy and the outcome is price stability.”

  9. Those of you insulting the minister are all fools. Go to North East and confirm what he is saying. If election is by population, North East alone can bring back Buhari if alive and also stand election 2019.

  11. Put all the book statistics aside, as a minister you cannot understand how nigerians feel. What is the price of petrol during Jonathan's regim and what is the price now, what is the price of rice then and now, how much is 1 dollar to naira then and now. You live in the choicest part of the country and you earn your fat pay and lots of allowance regularly, go and ask some civil servantes when last they earn regular pay. Name one commodity that is easily affordable today, from pure water to anything, yet no pay raise for salary earners, lots of children has dropped out of school because they cannot afford school fee. And their parents can barely feed them, these children will grow and end up becoming servants to your children whom you send abroad for quality education if God does not intervain. What a change. You talk of fighting corruption I am curious about our dear senate president and the code of conduct bureau, I am curious about a serving senate with a criminal case abroad. Tell me honestly are you exempted? Those who seek equity must do so with clean hands. As the hard working common Nigerians how is life for them now and during Jonathan's time and you will know how disconnected from reality you are.

    1. Thanks for making the truth bare. But they are bent on telling lies. Administration founded on lies. Are we surprised that the country is in recession with this caliber of people in the position of decision making? Like President like ministers, like the economy they operate.

  13. MY PEOPLE PERISHED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. After they request Buhari to bring recovered loot in to the economy yet they don't believe that money are being recovered on daily bases from their brothers who did this havoc to the nation's economy. They have forgotten the price of oil when PHD holder hold sway. They claim they where eating well during PHD holder's time. Asked them how many of them could eat three times a day and if they do what kind of food. Assuming rice was #5000.00 a bag during Ebele time, how much was the price of crude oil. What did he do for the people of NIGER DELTA, absolutely NOTHING. Those comments above are baby talk. If you all are truly suffering you won't have assess to internet to give foolish commentary. By time PMB and APC finished their 16 years in office that is the only time you can compare and contrast. If your brain is working well shot your mouth for now. This is because there is nothing you do to BUHARI at least for now. Or do you think if Buhari dies they will put your dirty father there. That fool who does not know left from right. Na wa for you eh
