The kingpin of the syndicate that kidnapped the wife of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Margaret Emefiele, has said the woman was the gang’s biggest catch.
The suspect, Musa Muhammad and five others, said to be Fulani and are currently being interrogated at the Edo State Police Command, have reportedly confessed that they were simply on a random kidnap operation on Benin-Agbor Expressway, when they accosted Mrs. Emefiele’s convoy.
Mohammed told detectives that Margaret’s abduction was not planned and that it was after they abducted her that they realised she was the wife of the CBN governor.
Recall that Margaret was abducted by a group of heavily-armed gunmen late last Thursday, along the Benin-Agbor road.
The Inspector General of Police’s Special Intelligence Monitoring Team, headed by Abba Kyari, a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, mandated to carry out the rescue operation, freed her from the kidnappers on Saturday.
In his confession before newsmen at the Edo State police command headquarters on Tuesday, Mohammed said, “After we kidnapped the woman, we thought God has finally blessed us. But police came and spoilt everything.
“We were 11 who carried out the operation. Before we abducted Margaret, we had already abducted a man. The man was dragged along to the area where Margaret was but after we realised our new catch was the CBN governor’s wife, we allowed the man to go, while basking in the euphoria of Margaret’s abduction.
“We concluded the ‘big fish’ was enough,” he confessed.
Meanwhile, as other members of the gang are still at large, the IGP team said they were hunting for them.
