Domestic accident: Delta State Governor, aides give different accounts on his injury

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and his aides have differed on which part of his body was injured during a domestic accident he said he suffered last week Wednesday.

While Okowa claimed that he was injured on the head when an errant tile fell on him, his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, had told our correspondent on Monday that his boss was injured on his hand.

Yet, a private media consultant and a close confidant of the governor, Fejiro Oliver, explained that he was injured on the leg.

On Wednesday, Okowa narrated how he narrowly escaped what could have been a devastating domestic accident when one of the wall tiles at the Government House Asaba fell on his head as he tried to wash his hands last week Wednesday.

The governor said he sustained a “minor injury,” confirming Tuesday’s to newsmen.

It was earlier reported that Okowa sustained an injury on his head following a domestic accident while preparing to attend the World Teachers’ Day held in Asaba last week Wednesday.

But the governor, while speaking on media reports concerning the incident on Wednesday, dismissed being flown abroad for medical treatment as a result.

He said, “The truth is that last Wednesday, I entered the washroom in my office and one of the tiles fell off from the wall and I had a minor cut on my head, I had two stitches and I was okay.

“People know I am a workaholic and that is why it didn’t stop me from working. I am hale and hearty.”

He expressed surprise that the incident was blown out of proportion by a section of the social and mainstream media, suggesting he collapsed and was flown abroad for medical attention.

“It is unfair and uncharitable to disseminate false information. It is very unfortunate at this age and time that people will intentionally misinform others when there are opportunities to find out what might have happened.

“I’m told that certain section of the social media reported that I have been flown abroad for medical treatment. When and how did that happen? When I have been very busy treating hundreds of files on my table,” Governor Okowa added.
