Why FG wants to impose 10% taxes on phone calls, text messages, data - Minister

The Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu says a proposal by the Nigerian government to impose a 10 percent tax on phone calls, text messages, data and more, would help enhance telecommunication services in the country.

Mr. Shittu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Osogbo, Osun State, that the proposed tax would also help to improve telecommunication infrastructure.

“We have a lot of deficiency in the provision of infrastructure in the telecommunication sector.

“And I believe that those who proposed the bill must have thought that government centrally relies on tax because without tax, government cannot operate,” he said.

The minister said the ministry was proposing a workshop to sensitise the public on the new bill.

The plan has been widely criticised by Nigerians.

  5. What kind of infrastructure does this rougue federal government provide for the telecoms sector?
May God punish those who are looking for all avenues to rip Nigerians off.
They charge higher electricity tariffs, increased petroleum cost when the price is crashing worldwide. Workers in the country are among the least paid in the world ($105 per month). The telecoms companies cater for their support infrastructures (Electricity, fibre optics, satellite backbones etc). These costs already go to subscribers. The witches in power now want to reap where they did not sow even when the telecoms companies paid fabulous license fees.
If the citizens are pushed to the wall, the world army cannot hold them back. Beware!
