NPFL Match Day 34 Round-up: Rangers Demolish Rivers, Back On Top; 3SC, Enyimba Fall


Enugu Rangers reclaimed the top position in the Nigeria Professional Football League after trouncing title rivals River United 4-0 in a Nigeria Professional Football League matchday 34 fixture at ‘the Cathedral’ Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu on Sunday.


The Flying Antelopes now have 54 points, one more than Rivers United who dropped to the second position.

Tope Olusesi started the rout for the Flying Antelopes when he netted the curtain raiser five minutes before the break.

Olusesi who missed last weekend’s match due to suspension buried the ball home from 10 yards after receiving a glorious pass from Osas Okoro.

The midfielder turned provider two minutes after the break as he laid the ball for Godwin Aguda to score the second goal.

Olusesi was however sent off in the 62nd minute for head-butting an opponent.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Coal City side added a third through Christian Madu eight minutes from time.

Two minutes later, Obinna Nwobodo hit the back of the net to make it 4-0 for the hosts.
At the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano Pillars beat Sunshine Stars 2-0 with Amos Gyang and Gambo Mohammed scoring the goals.

In Makurdi, Lobi Stars surged up the table and increased their chances of picking a continental ticket with a 1-0 win against champions Enyimba.

Nanem Imenger fired home the winner in the third minute of the encounter.
Akwa United compounded MFM FC’s by woes by thrashing the Olukoya Boys 3-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

Hassan Babangida scored twice in the 18th and 72nd minutes, while Friday Ubong added the third on the dot of 90 minutes.
Ifeanyi Ifeanyi reduced the deficit after converting from the spot in added time.
The visitors now need a miracle to escape the drop after another disappointing outing.

In another matchday 34 fixture, Plateau United and Shooting Stars finished with 10 men each after having a player sent off with the hosts winning 1-0.
Waheed Omololu was issued a red card for a foul on a Plateau United player inside the box in the 74th minute.
Benjamin Turba calmly dispatched the penalty into the net a minute later.
Plateau United’s Kelechi John received his own marching orders late in the game for time wasting.

Relegation-bound Ikorodu United recorded their first away win of the season following a shocking 1-0 away win against Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
Fatai Abdullahi fired home from 30 yards in the 54th minute to hand the Oga Boys the win.
The hosts now look destined to play in the National League next season following the defeat.

There was also joy for Warri Wolves as they beat Nasarawa United 1-0 at the Warri City Stadium with Kelvin Itoya netting the winner in the 66th minute.
