'Nigerians regret voting for Buhari'

Following the declaration by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS that the nation’s economy has gone into recession, social critic and former All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship aspirant in Benue state, Mr. Nath Apir has stated that Nigerians are currently regretting voting for President Muhammadu Buhari at the last general elections.

Apir who spoke Thursday, in Makurdi, lamented that the APC led government had failed to do the needful to sustain the level of economic growth recorded by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.

He said, “during the last administration. Our economy was performing above average.

This government came in and because every government comes in to fix the problems of the previous government. It took Presidemt Buhari six months to appoint Ministers in a country where, whether rightly or wrongly was rated by the World Bank and the IMF as Africa’s largest and number one economy. We did not get that rating through bribe.

“On coming to government it behoved this administration to inflate the tyres that were low on air pressure, grease those bearings that needed to be oiled so that we don’t grind to a halt just like we are in now. “Our country is in shambles, the people can hardly feed, the Naira has crashed to over N400 to the Dollar.

They talk of recovering money from looters and we have not seen where the monies have gone to. Where exactly are the three or five key pillars of the economic policies of the APC government?

“Agree that there are issues of militancy in the south south, other governments also faced same challenge. Buhari came in with a military mentality to crush them.

Look, civilized people negotiate, they don’t do that because they are weak. They do that beacuse they know that you cannot go forward in a situation of crisis and chaos. “He has just aggravated our economic situation in the country.

Six months no Minister and the country was drifting and has not recovered till today and he has brought us to this level. Nigerians are regretting voting Buhari, that is the truth. Continuing, Apir said, “all his policies had been anti corruption, by the time he came in as military ruler in 1983 we resorted to the purchasing of essential commodities.

We are back to that vicious circle. We are back to anti corruption war without real economic policies. “Let me tell you, western countries are neck deep in corruption. Don’t be deceived, they have been receiving stolen monies from Africa without questioning the sources of such wealth.

Today we are asking for the return of those monies and they are asking for proof that the monies are our own when they did not ask the alleged thieves where they got the monies from.

“These are basic things we should know, they use the monies to develop their economies. President Buhari’s war on corruption is excellent and I support it, but he must not use his anti corruption war to destroy the country’s economy. “He should strengthen institutions to fight corruption.

You want to fight corruption go after bankers, permanent secretaries as well, don’t just go after only highly exposed political people. These people cannot transfer monies without the banks. Permanent secretaries are the accounting officers of their offices. How come they are not being held to account. “The economy is in shambles and he has no solution.

The experience of the Finance Minister is low. Who is running this economy. You cannot assemble a group of yes sir people and expect good results. No one to challenge you. An educated man said, ‘we are all ignorant of everything except in that which we know’, that is why you need great minds around you as a leader. So our country is in recession, though I’m not surprise because we had same in 1983 to 1985.

“Who is running this economy? As a President he is looking at a maze but you cannot read or lead the economy inside that maze without anybody interpreting it to you, it’s a matrix. Buhari has to reorganize his administration, he has to push out those who obviously have no business in the government, corrupt and inefficient people are everywhere in this government they must leave now to save our country.”

  1. No value in this discourse. If made President, what will he do? Stop generalizing that Nigerians are regretting, only corrupt people are regretting. Good people are suggesting way out and engaging in plan Bs till Nigeria bounces back.

    1. Hmmm. Some Nigerians are still sensible. Thank God. If corrupt people start operating legally and terrorists in the north and south south stop their madness then we will have a better chance at surviving the global economic crises. Nigerians are trying to implode due to senselessness and mass stupidity.

    2. Precisely! Nigerians are regretting voting Buhari, that is the truth
What makes it "the truth"? Is it based on an opinion survey? Would he rather still have GEJ as president? How can people assume that their view represents the majority?

I am actually more disappointed that NE carried this opinion as a headline fact.

    1. True. But malnutrition is okay nothing like poor malnutrition. The thing my brother is that we have been living on thin ice for many years borrowing to pay salaries and collecting salary for not working (ghost workers) now we have to work to eat and we borrow to fix roads and infrastructure. We need to stop crying about corruption money that has stopped flowing and get busy with our hands. Create something, go into farming. At least if poor people can eat what they farm hunger will be reduced. Everyone wants to go to Lagos and Abuja. What's wrong with staying in the village and doing agriculture and feeding your family and even making some money from selling the produce. Are we so destroyed by corruption that we cannot even climb tree and pluck mango and eat again???? Haba

  5. We can only hope things will get better before his time elapses but if we are to judge by what we see presently, this administration is without direction. Some of us have chosen to pretend that all is well, suffering and smiling. Someone wrote " Only corrupt people are regretting ". So if someone shares his/her opinion he/she will be deemed corrupt ? May God help us. Continue deceiving yourself pretending all is well. Come to think of it, why is it that PMB's first coming had a recession and his present administration has another ? Someone can be good at a certain skill but might not necessarily make a good manager. Buhari might have the will power to fight corruption, but there are other factors that propel the economy. Its obvious what he likes to do best is just tackle corruption. The truth is ; he isn't fit to lead present day Nigeria. Period

    2. PMB could possibly have been better in charge of EFCC but certainly he has no skill for the presidency.

  6. Let the President complete his tenure first before we rate his administration. Also, let's criticize constructively not otherwise. This is our country.

  7. Nigeria's problems are insurmountable. The problems arise principally from the system we are operating and the person at the helm of affairs. The president is too sectional, vindictive and out of tune for the job. There's need to reorganise the country & so far the north resists this reorganization the nore the country gets deeper into problems

  8. I maintain. People passing negative comments should come and rule a local govt in Nigeria and let's see what they can do not to talk of ruling Nigeria. Patience is what we need to understand that what we are passing through will soon be over. No one should accept corruption as a way to enjoy. What is not good is not good. Claiming thousands are dying is fallacy! People have been dying before we were born. It can't be attributed to the economy. Nigerians are trying, let us help one another till things get better. Past governments relied only on Oil, diversification has started and we can't reap the fruit immediately. Enough of criticisms, suggest solutions. Some of us are good at bringing people down, I bet that in the smallest unit of the society, if such people can be assessed, they are not doing well at all. Right thinking people are getting back to farming and looking into others ways of surviving. Redeeming Nigeria is a collective responsibility. What are you doing presently as an individual to safe the future of the country? What are you doing as well to help curb corrupt practices which has led to the present situations. Contractors have finished roads on papers, roads are death traps! Universities have collected allocations going into the pockets of individuals in the institutions. Just let's us all mount pressure against such acts and see if the country will not be better than before. Quote me, fuel will still sell below N50.

  12. HO, HOW I LOVE THE OLD ROMAN EMPEROR,JULIUS CAESAR, WHO WEEPS WHEN THE POOR CRIED. DEAR ECONOMIC ADVISERS TO THE PRESIDENT, DO YOU NEED TO BE REMINDED THAT NIGERIA OUGHT TO PRODUCE ENOUGH RICE TO EAT AND BELLYFUL AND ALSO HAVE SURPLUS TO EXPORT BEFORE YOU CAN BAN IMPORTATION OF RICE? FOR ADVISING PMB TO INVEST IN AGRICULTURE, I GIVE YOU ALL 100 PER CENT BUT FOR BANNING IMPORTATION OF RICE WHEN WE HAVE NOT STARTED PRODUCING A GRAIN OF RICE, I SCORE YOU ALL HIS ADVISERS MINUS 200 PER CENT. IN FACT, YOU ALL NEED TO BE SACKED & IMPRISONED FOR MISLEADING OUR PATRIOTIC PRESIDENT.

  13. As old as PMB is, he is still better than majority of us young people without integrity. Many youths are after what they can get and not what they can offer. Many are fraudsters, yahoo-yahoo, the ones in NASS are padding, the ones that are SAs to the older ones are not innovative. How old is Facebook inventor? What are his counterparts in age done or invented in Nigeria? Lol
