As Nigerians still seethe with anger over the poor preparation Team Nigeria athletes had which resulted in their woeful outing at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil last, Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung may further infuriate them with his latest claim that athletes don’t need too much preparation to excel in competitions.
Speaking yesterday on Brila FM radio monitored in Lagos in the wake of the sterling performance posted so far by Team Nigeria athletes at the on-going Paralympic Games also in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Dalung said the Paralympic athletes also had bad preparations like their able bodied athletes but are doing better in Brazil. According to Dalung, “the disabled athletes have shown that all you need is a winning mentality and not too much preparation, they train-ed under the same condition with their able bodied counterparts but they are winning medals now.”
However, Commonwealth champion, Odunayo Adekuruoye also speaking on the same programme countered the minister, saying that there is no way an athlete who trained for a month or two could do well or think of winning a medal as she apologised to her fans for failing them at the Olympics. SOLOMON DALUNG “It is not possible to win a medal with one or two months training. We had looked forward to good training and hoped to do well at the Olympics.
I want to apologise to Nigerians who had looked up to me for a medal,” she said. The publicity-seeking sports minister who had kept sealed lips following the poor outing at the Rio Olympics jerked back to his usual self ostensibly because of the performance of the Paralympic athletes who have garnered a total of nine medals consisting six gold, two silver and one bronze. Who is this man they call Nigeria sports minister...... Am very ashamed of him.....God forbid.
ReplyDeleteHe looks like he's from the boys scout
DeleteJonathan Dalung is plain stupid and unworthy to be a sport minister. He might as well tell us that to pass an exam, you don't need to study, just have a passing spirit. Nigerian athletes work under conditions of low morale, lack of support and inadequate training, yet we expect them to perform miracles in international competition. Dalung, please use your brain if you have any.
ReplyDeleteVery sorry to say. This Dalung is not qualified to lead the sports ministry. Period
DeleteAnd Buhari says this man is qualified to be a minister. This government is more confused than the meaning of the word confusion can portray.
ReplyDeleteThey need training to.
ReplyDeleteIs like saying politicians don't need campaign to win elections

Wonder why this guy is still a minister.
ReplyDeleteThis man is brainless though am not surprised it's the change the promised. Now he is changing sports to no training but just wake up and compete
ReplyDeleteWhen you choose a Barister as sport minister..... shame!
ReplyDeleteIt took this administration months to select and appoint ministers, yet this is what they could make of that waste of time. Pulling the economy backward.
I'mean just tired of everything.
Thank God I am not the son of this Barister.
It is not Dalung's fault....
DeleteWhen Buhari put lawyers as ministers.... Where we need technocrats, baba put lawyers who don't know but will be claiming to know..... And they won't take advice, dey know all!
That's the reflection on the state of things today...
When you choose a Barister as sport minister..... shame!

Well, thank God he's not buying coffin for athletes... It's only in this country that governor buys 600 coffins for the people rather than thinking of how to better their lot....Now, sport minister said" you don't need to train to win medals in international competition with winning spirit and you'll win gold". It's like telling your son not to read for WAEC, just go there with fighting spirit and you'll come out with A's.....Stupid minister
ReplyDeleteNigerians, why do we always have brain dead as sport minister? check history..
ReplyDeleteWhen you put a square peg in a round hole, what will expect. Check all our ministers, which of them was given the portfolio he studied. Don't blame the man, blame the person that put him there. I wonder why he urges his children to study for exams.
ReplyDeleteThis man called Dalung doesn't know anything about sports and his the worst sport minister NIGERIA have ever had.
ReplyDeleteSquare peg in round hole. Na Jazz dem need!!! This red beret man is not worth to be a primary school games master.
ReplyDeleteand do not expect to get to games venue until few hours to the beginning of a match, play the competition and still win bronze abi! what do one expect from a warder-prison officer
ReplyDeleteIt's like saying that you don't even need to go to school to be President in Nigeria.
