Adamu Warns Sports Minister Against Declaring State Of Emergency On Sports

Former Director General of National Sports Commission, Dr. Amos Adamu has warned Nigeria Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung not to declare state of emergency on sports, alerting that it will be counter productive.

Dr. Adamu while reacting to Nigeria's dismal performance at the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil, attributed the downturn in sports to poor planning and sports being in the hands of non professional administrators.

"With professionals managing our sports, the Rio Olympic Games poor show should not have happened. Our preparation and buildup to the Games were faulty because the ministry did not allow those who know better to take charge. You don't go to the Olympics with greenhorn athletes and administrators," Adamu stated.

Dr. Adamu stressed:‎ "I mean if professionals were in charge, there was no way, Blessing Okagbare should have been allowed to drop out of the long jump where her chances of winning medal appeared likely than the 100 and 200 meters sprint she participated in. I believe that if Okagbare had been managed properly, Nigeria would have won a medal in athletics."

He continued " declaring a state of emergency on sports will not help in the development of the game. The solution is to allow professionals to manage sports. Our Rio scoresheet of winning only a bronze medal by the football team is shameful for a country with a huge reputation like Nigeria."

The former CAF executive committee member stated that the situation in sports is not hopeless as being envisaged, positing that with good and professional management, the problem can be fixed . He added that Nigeria has the manpower to be among the best in the world of sports.
