Why I left Ikorodu United - Shorunmu

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, has parted company with Nigeria Professional Football League club Ikorodu United.

Shorunmu, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, said on Monday night that he has mutually stepped down from his position at the struggling NPFL side as their assistant coach in charge of goalkeepers training.

“When I joined the club, I had a clause in my contract which allows me to leave if the club failed to retain their Premier League status,” the former Besiktas of Turkey shot-stopper said.

“But on Tuesday, I called the chairman and told him it doesn’t make sense spending money on me any longer.

“I told him the direction of things doesn’t paint a picture of possible survival for the team and as such it’s better for me to take a walk so he won’t continue to spend his money on me.

“He said no!, Ike no, don’t go. Since you came things have taken a lift significantly but I said I had to leave”, Shorunmu who had previously held similar goalkeeper trainer position at Enyimba, Super Eagles and U-23 Eagles said.

The former Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Grasshoppers of Switzerland goalkeeper was contracted seven months ago to assist Dutch coach Theo De Jong in a frantic effort to pull Ikorodu United out of their imminent relegation.

The club are 19th in the NPFL standings with no chance of survival with five games remaining in the league fixtures.
