US warns citizens against traveling to 20 states in Nigeria

The United States has cautioned its citizens to avoid all travel to 20 states for security reasons, stating that the security there remains fluid and unpredictable.

The Department of State, specifically warned Americans against travel to Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states, noting that it’s ability to provide assistance to US citizens in the three states remains severely limited.

The Department of State in a travel warning on its website on Wednesday, strongly urged US citizens in Nigeria to consider their own personal security and to keep personal safety in the forefront of their travel planning.

The Department recommended against all but essential travel to 17 other states due to the risk of kidnappings, robberies, and other armed attacks.

The states are, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

“Based on safety and security risk assessments, the Embassy maintains restrictions for travel by US officials to the states listed above; officials must receive advance clearance by the US Mission for any travel to those states,” it stated.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Donald Awunah, could not be reached on Thursday for reaction to the security alert. He had yet to respond to an SMS as of the time of filing this report.

The Department further advised all US citizens to be particularly vigilant around government security facilities; churches, mosques, and other places of worship; locations where large crowds may gather, such as hotels, clubs, bars, restaurants, markets, shopping malls; and other areas frequented by expatriates and foreign travelers.

It explained that security measures in the country is heightened due to threats posed by extremist groups, and “U.S. citizens may encounter police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible road blocks throughout the country.”

The mission pointed out that the Boko Haram group, designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the Department of State, had claimed responsibility for many attacks in the country.

It also informed Americans that local government curfews are intermittently in effect in several states in the North.

  2. I think the US government is just stupid, if you warn against traveling to 20 states in Nigeria, why are you in Nigeria? You should better stay in your country. You don't warn people of not traveling to Dallas and the rest in the US where there had been several killings of the blacks and nothing has been done!

  3. Nigeria is a failed state. A zoo. The sooner we divide mainly on basically tribal/national lines. Smaller ones can join up. Abubakar has right telling John bull in Bayelsa how to spend his resources or live his life. That way we can select leaders who are directly accountable and not selected corrupt abuja stooges. We will end up like Somalia if care is not taken. If we cannot do that then at least remove the parasitic northern part that fights against progress for all

  5. America is turning its back on Buhari so soon? What could have happened? After installing him just last year, they are quickly trying to bring his government to disrepute. What happened to the assistance they promised him when he visited them? What happened to the hope he reposed in them and abandoning his tasks? When he was supposed to appoint his cabinet, he chose to seek their help in Washington instead, junketting round the world like Ferdinand Magellan. What happened to those so-called 'attack helicopters' they promised him? When the same America was busy embarrassing Nigeria right, left and centre, and blocking our essential arms purchase to our armed forces, he was rejoicing and mocking Nigeria. Why are his friends now abandoning him now? Imagine, 20 states have been blacklisted now ehn! The new Sherrifat in town, where are you? Their cousins in Britain are even accusing him of 'diverting' their £800m which they gave him to fight Boko Haram to fighting his enemies and christians in the south. Why are they doing this to their 'angel' friend less than 18 months after helping him to 'win' an election. Are they planning to embargo the whole country in the coming months?

  6. @ifeowu,am not surprise, most of the people criticing buhari are from the southeast.Ever since buhari came into office,it has been endless barrage of attacks barely into his 1st year in office.Nigerians should let them go and never allow them back. They are the cause of all the issues we are experiencing in Nigeria now when the orchestrated the first coup and killed mostly the Yoruba and the Hausa.Ever since that coup their has been a huge distrust among the tribes, the Hausa obviously consolidated in their power by purging the igbos and the Yoruba out of the military upper hierarchy by retiring them before they get to a specific rank.Jonathan was there, but they didn't ask for biafra then, and also the completion of the second naija bridge.Buhari just got into power about a year now, they are asking for the moon from a guy they didn't even Vote for (not that he needed their votes anyway). This same guy has continued the construction of the Niger bridge amiss all the challenges he faced. One of the reasons why the Hausa declared war on them in the north is their utterance and their need to want to take over from their host community. All infractions can never be tolerated in the southeast but yet, they expect people to put up with their crap in other part of Nigeria. They now go around saying Lagos and some part of the southwest is a no man's land, this was how the north chaos started and if they continued this same nonsense no one will dare try in inorganic, their might be a part 2 in the south west.Landlords don't want to rent houses to them because of the headache and their agrivating nature,I don't see the landlords saying that about the Hausa, middle belt, the Yoruba or south south people.I am from the south south,we don't like them as well. They are agitating for biafra and trying to make it seem we are a part of it,we are not part of your nonsense,u only want us because of our oil,if we are to split from Nigeria,it will be on our own and not to join you people and your need to dominate others
