The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, on Wednesday said it would commence implementation of speed-limiting device on commercial vehicles in the country.
The announcement was made on Wednesday at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, said he was happy to formally announce the commencement despite numerous obstacles faced by officials while analysing the technology and trying to convince Nigerians about the benefits of its acceptance.
Mr. Oyeyemi said the obstacles forced the agency to shift the launching date from initial June 1, 2015, schedule to the new date.
“The final directive from the presidency is clear; the enforcement date for the implementation of the speed limiting device is on Oct. 1 and we have had series of stakeholders meeting,” Mr. Oyeyemi said.
“The essence of today’s meeting is to finally convey the directive of the federal government to the stakeholders that with effect from Oct. 1, the implementation and enforcement would commence.”
Mr. Oyeyemi said a platform that will serve as monitoring system for total compliance of the policy had been put in place as well as punitive measures for errant drivers.
“We already have the portal that we will use to monitor this, we don’t need to pursue any vehicle, we will just stop you like we verify licence.
“On the tablet we will check whether your vehicle has been installed with the device, if it has not, we will impound the vehicle and we make sure that you do the right thing.
“We are not talking about fines now ,it’s to save lives so we will impound the vehicle then the owner of the vehicle will be made to install the device before the journey continues.” Mr. Oyeyemi said.
Mr. Oyeyemi said the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, was responsible for the design of the policy, adding that a review would be conducted after three to six months of commencement to appraise compliance by motorists.
Security agencies, federal lawmakers, bureaucrats as well as members of road transport unions were represented at the event. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

This is good to reduce the accident caused by commercial drivers in the Country. As time goes on, private drivers will be included.
ReplyDeleteI hope this will not be too expensive to get & install?
Another strategy to make illegal money.major cause of accidents range from bad roads lack of awareness on road use and drive rules( that is whybubsee some drivers overtaking on hills andd bands where they can't see incoming vehicles, or some wickedly closing the gap between them and a vehicle ahead of the wen another is overtaking them causing serious threats to the overtaking and incoming vehicle), and driving under the influence if Buzz drugs or whatever. These kind of devices is not for general public. Or will yourdevice also ensure the arrest of those who do below the speed limit? Pls we are still struggling with fuel increment stress you want to add another.

ReplyDeleteFRSC SHOULD FACE THE PRIMARY THINGS THAT WILL IMPROVE SAFETY ON OUR ROADS. RIGHT NOW DRIVERS LICENSES ARE GIVEN WITHOUT ROAD TESTS, LEARNERS DRIVE ON OUR ROADS UNACCOMPANIED, MOST DRIVERS, EVEN TRAFFIC WARDENS DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE HIGHWAY CODE LOOKS LIKE, THE ROUNDABOUTS ARE AREAS OF SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST INSTEAD OF GIVE WAY TO.....TO WORSEN IT ALL, MOST FEDERAL HIGHWAYS DO NOT NEED SPEED LIMITS COS OF THEIR STATE OF DISREPAIR. THE SPEEDS ARE LIMITED AUTOMATICALLY BY POT HOLES OR THEY ARE TOTALLY IMPASSABLE. OUR ROADS ARE NOT LIKE THE ROADS OF THE COUNTRY FROM WHICH YOU IMPORTED THOSE EQUIPMENTS. FIRST THINGS FIRST. LET NIGERIANS FIRST BE TAUGHT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MOVING A CAR AND DRIVING A CAR. LET YOUR MEN ALSO EMBRACE CHANGE AND STOP TURNING THEIR DUTY POSTS INTO BUSINESS CENTERS.THEN THINGS WILL IMPROVE. THE FEDRAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD ALSO DO THEIR BIT BY WORKING ON OUR ROADS WHICH ALSO CAUSE ACCIDENTS.IT SHALL BE WELL IF THESE THINGS ARE PUT IN PLACE.WHAT IS CAUSING ACCIDENTS ON OUR ROADS? MAINLY UNTRAINED DRIVERS BEHIND THE STEERING WHEELS. TAKE THEM TO TASK AND GO BACK TO THE OLD DAYS OF VIO ROAD TESTS AND LETS SEE WHETHER ACCIDENTS RATES WILL NOT DROP DRASTICALLY
ReplyDeleteInsensitive! Government should at this time concentrate on more worrisome issues facing our nation. No food at tables, no light for industries and most roads are in deplorable state anyway.
ReplyDeleteFor every FRSC 'oga on top' there has always been a project to pursue. Sometimes making Nigerians pay for plate number twice. Now we need to start asking how much the manufacturers of this device or equipment promised to release per device purchase. what a nation without leaders!
