Serena Williams’ coach reveals she is ‘pain free’ ahead of US Open

Serena Williams is “pain-free”, as she seeks to set a record of 23 Grand Slams in the modern era, when the US Open begins, according to her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

The world number one, who is also seeking a record seventh title in New York, has been battling with a right shoulder injury, which contributed to her early departure from the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

Serena also withdrew from the Cincinnati tournament last week, but Mouratoglou has positive news.

“She has been pain-free for a few days now,” he told journalists on Sunday.

“The shoulder is still not 100 percent but it’s very close and she will find a way. She has a lot more to her game than just the serve — she has the power and mental strength.

“She wanted to play the Olympics in Rio, it was very important for her but the shoulder was killing her. She was just putting balls in play, but that’s the past.”

Serena faces Ekaterina Makarova of Russia, the world number 36, on Tuesday.
