Michael Phelps now has a total of 25 medals of which 21 are Gold medals after the American swimmer won Gold in the 200m butterfly and Gold in the 4x200-meter relay event on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro.
Phelps, 31, comprehensively beat defending champion Chad le Clos in the 200m butterfly before he helped the US win the men's 4x200m freestyle relay.
“One of the things that is kind of sticking in my head more, that’s a lot of medals,” Phelps said to reporters. “We’ve got a lot of medals. It’s just insane. It’s mind-blowing, to think about. There wasn’t a shot in hell I was losing that tonight,” he continued.
“Doing a double like that is a lot harder now than what it once was, That is for sure.”
His lifelong coach, Bob Bowman had nothing but praise for Phelps, who he says has made a remarkable comeback in the space of four years, given that he has faced a personal crisis, retirement and comeback since London 2012.
“It’s remarkable,” Bob said. Given not just his age, but everything that’s transpired since London and before London — just the totality of it.”
