Policemen arrested for mounting roadblocks

The Bayelsa State Police Commissioner, Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, has ordered the arrest of two policemen for allegedly flouting the directive of the police headquarters against mounting of roadblocks.

The two unnamed policemen are said to be working in the state Police command.

It was lerant that Ogunjemilusi ordered the arrest of the officers following an investigation.

Ogunjemilusi, who confirmed the arrest on Saturday, said the apprehension of the cops would send a strong message to other officers and men in the command.

The commissioner restated that roadblocks had been stopped across the country including Bayelsa by the Inspector-General of Police.

He said the arrested officers would be sanctioned, adding that they could be demoted to serve as deterrent to other policemen.

He said the police were only allowed to adopt targeted or sporadic stop-and-search aimed at specific crime in policing the highways.

Ogunjemilusi noted that he had passed an instruction that any person who stopped a vehicle must write detailed reports about his findings.

The police boss said, “Roadblocks have been cancelled by the IGP and I am here to declare to you that in Bayelsa State also, roadblocks have been cancelled.

“What is permitted is targeted stop-and-search aimed at specific crime or a sporadic one aimed at preempting some criminal elements based on information. It is not the usual blocking of the road and checking of vehicles anyhow.

  1. Just 2 policemen? There are thousands of them mounting road blocks everywhere harassing motorists and I wonder if the job of the police is to check car documents when they have thousands of unsolved cases at the station. This report is a joke, Lagos there are police road blocks everywhere doing their regular harassment and extortion. Come to Fesrac 1st Avenue, Apple junction, 2nd rainbow, Ajao estate, orile iganmu bridge etc it's business as usual. There was once an accident I witnessed between an okada man and a vehicle at apple junction whichwas getting heated up, close to 15 policemen were there just watching and laughing disgracefully. So mister police commissioner don't come here and tell us you arrested 2 police men.

  2. They're a disgrace, sometime ago, they stopped me at 2nd rainbow and asked for my papers, they checked and saw that everything was complete, then asked for the purchase receipt of the car, I was stunned, the delayed me until I parted with N200. Just very very few of them are real policemen, the rest are business men. Buhari needs to visit them too, they've institutionalised corruption.
