Nigeria was Africa's largest economy when I handed over to you- Jonathan replies Buhari

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has insisted that he handed over a Nigeria that was economically viable to his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari.

Jonathan’s remark follows accusation that he left a bad economy for his successor to inherit.

The Buhari-led Federal Government since assumption of power last year, has continued to accuse it’s predecessor of being responsible for the country’s current economic challenges.

But the former President, in his response to these criticisms, maintained that he handed over the best Nigerian government with the largest economy in Africa to Buhari.

In a statement he personally signed, Jonathan said, “I took over a Nigeria that was the second largest economy in Africa with a GDP of $270.5 billion in 2009, I handed over a Nigeria that had grown to become the largest economy in Africa and the 24th largest economy in the World, with a GDP of $574 billion.

    1. Hi Johnson for APC blaming PDP is nothing new. A failed government must find his predecessor to blame. In UK, Conservative and Lib Dem blamed Labour for 5yrs while in USA. Obama did not fo one day blame G.W Bush because he knows his policies are going to work and he chose the best brain as his secretaries. Imagine Clinton whom Obama defeated to win Democratic flag beerier worked under him as secretary of State for 4yrs. Can that happen in Nigeria???

  6. Even though I was no fan of yours. We must call the spade a spade and not a digging tool. Your regime plundered this nation left right and centre. And you seem not to have been in charge of the country, thus anything went. However your team of Ministers seem to know what they were about therefore thing's worked and the economy grew.

The reverse is the case today. We now have a president who is in control of the nation, this regime so far are yet to show their thieving side, but we don't seem to have a ministerial team that know what they are about. The result is a shrinking economy.

I just wish we could do some swapping to cancel out the wrongs.

    1. Hi Gerald, You made a good point. For a country to move forward. The president must pick and place round peg in a round hole. Our current ministers are not really the best of the 170 millions in Nigeria. Think about our finance minister. I have not seen any concrete policy from his ministry to better our country's failing economy.
