President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said Nigeria has suddenly become a poor country as a result of the sharp drop in price of oil.
He however said the prudent manner his administration had been handling the nation’s resources had made it impossible for people to know that there is severe shortage in the country.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke while receiving the United Nations Population Fund’s Executive Director and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said commitment to transparency and accountability was serving the government in good stead, despite severe shortage of resources in the country.
“It has been a very difficult year for Nigeria. Before we came to office, petroleum sold for about $100 per barrel. Then it crashed to $37, and now oscillates between $40 and $45 per barrel.
“Suddenly, we’re a poor country, but commitment to transparency and accountability is not making people know that there is severe shortage,” the President said.
Asking UNFPA to bear with Nigeria in whichever area the country could not live up to its responsibilities for now, Buhari said exploding population and different cultural practices in the country provide fertile ground for research to organisations like UNFPA.
The President thanked the UN agency for its commitment to saving lives in Nigeria, particularly of women and children. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

By one mans favour blessings come to people and by another man disfavour poverty comes to the land. Who know why Nigeria is in this present economic state. GEJ and PMB are two different name with different meanings. I think things don't just happen.

ReplyDeleteI wonder why Mr president has to keep telling the whole that Nigeria is poor, its so sad that this man lacks wisdom and good sense of management what nigerians expect to hear from you is measures put in place to fix the problems.no president of any country will speak bad of his country like you do,this utterances will further reduce the image and financial position of the country below it actual possition.becouse the world will have it that for the president to have mention that now nigeria is a poor country it's means the situation is as bad than what we are seing.
ReplyDeleteAre you saying PMB brought the low price of oil throughout the world or a you saying he rules over the world. This makes your comment ugly. Whoever believes we should have continued with PDP as constituted last time is just mad.
ReplyDeleteyou are the one mad as you don't know what to say. is dis the change APC promised to give Nigerians. We all know PDP messed up the economic but not as bad as this devil buhari and Antagonist Party of Confusion

ReplyDeleteI was 14years old when Buhari came 30years ago, thesame thing happened, then we were not totally depend on oil in this nation and now as a civilian president more evil have been done, there is hunger everywhere now and I blame President Jonathern for investing so much in the north. Also blame all the youth that refused to listen to the advise of elders for voting for Buhari, I also blame Tinubu for his miscalculation because he thought he will be able to control both Senate and House of Rep to tame Buhari! Who doesn't know that Buhari signed evil convent with the devil to afflict people of Nigeria? Nigeria can not experience good change under the leadership of Buhari, now he has started forcing NNPC to look for oil in the north, the one in Ondo yet to be visited, Lagos also, thus selfish Fulani man is only here for a revenge and cart away the little resources of Nigeria APC!!! Devil
ReplyDeleteoga baba you are they cause of this poverty,God is watching you
ReplyDeleteTo my south west brothers SAI BABA.... to northerners SAI BABA.... Nigeria is suddenly poor under APC after so many years of other administration. Chaaaaaannnnngeee hassss coooommmmmmeeee

ReplyDeleteHow can Nigeria be a very poor country now when the minister of finance informed us that there was improvement in revenue last month and that we had more from the non oil sector. Moreover, pmb is not supposed to complain because the budget was pegged at 38 USD hence the price of crude is still within the favourable limit.
ReplyDeletePMB is just trying to give reason for not being able to meet certain obligations but next time, such utterances should not be aired to the whole world as it will discourage investors.May God guide you rightly.Amina.
