New militant group emerges, gives oil firms 48-hour quit notice

The Niger Delta crisis worsened yesterday, as a new militant group, Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate (NDGJM), threatened to attack oil and gas facilities in the upland of the oil-rich region.

The new group, which decried what it called Federal Government’s and multinational oil companies’ neglect of the region, gave oil companies 48-hours to evacuate their personnel from the region, especially in the upland.

In an online statement by its spokesman, Aldo Agbalaja, NDGJM threatened to attack Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) at Ekpan in Uvwie Local Government of Delta State as well as the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) at Eleme in Eleme Local Government of Rivers State.

The statement said its decision to change from peaceful approach to violence followed what it called Federal Government’s failure to appreciate and consolidate the peaceful disposition of the people in the upland part of the region.

NDGJM said: “We are asking all oil multinationals still in the upland of our region – Agip, Total, Shell, Mobil, Shorelines, Neconde, E. D. Western, Seplat and others – to commence the evacuation of their personnel from the region, especially in the Ogba/Egi axis of Rivers State, Urhobo/Isoko/Ndokwa axis of Delta State and other upland oil producing areas, within 48 hours.

“We also want to bring it to the attention of the Federal Government and the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that the refineries in Warri (Urhobo land) and Port Harcourt (Eleme) and the gas plant at Otorogun will come down in a few days.

“We have come at this point to ensure that our oppressors, being the Federal Government, the state governments in the six core Niger Delta states, who have received billions of dollars in the past years but have brought little or no development to the region, and the so-called super-ethnic nations, who have yielded to greed and wickedness and have exposed the rest of us in the oil-rich but deeply impoverished region, to crippling squalor.

“NDGJM is a coalition of forces across the Niger Delta, fighting for the interest of the region. The Federal Government and the oil multinational companies have been making a grave mistake by equating the interest of the Ijaw as that of all the tribes of the region. Indeed, this is a mistake that is about to take a more devastating toll than has ever been seen or experienced in the history of Nigeria.

“Any moment from now, we shall be making a loud statement, which we believe should be loud enough for all to hear and take seriously; afterwards, we will state our demands. We have considered this ‘coming statement’ reluctantly inevitable because of the recalcitrance of federal authorities as well as oil giants. They have decided to ignore calls to reason and have made violence the only option.

“The people of the upland Niger Delta, under whose watch the largest and most critical oil assets are located, have been ignored over the years. The government and the oil companies pander to every whim and cough of those who have violently engaged the state. Just as in the 2009 experience, the Federal Government and oil companies have started yet another round of negotiation with the Ijaw front, in the name of all the people of the Niger Delta.

“This will not work. Since they do not regard the assets in our areas important enough to be protected, we shall root them all out of …Niger Delta. We don’t want to make this mistake any longer: violence pays, as it has become the only voice the government hearkens to.”

  2. I really wonder the role of NigerianEye and other online media in creating tension in the country. Twitter has a policy of not allowing its platform to be used for propagating threats of violence, and has been shutting down accounts of violent groups, including those based in the Nigeria. Now, we have Nigerian-owned media making themselves available as a mouthpiece of violent groups threatening Nigeria. This is most irresponsible. So, anyone can call or write to NE threatening the country with violence and NE would relay the message to Nigerians?

  3. The oil is ours. We can do whatever we want with it. I always say that if since before independence we have been agitating, FG should appreciate that the end is yet to come on this issue. Did authoritarian Middle East leaders expect Arab Spring against their so-called divine dictators? No. Time has changed; unfortunately, Buhari has refused to see the intensification of our demands since the beginning of our so-called "nascent" democrazzzzzy. Read our lips; read between the lines. Its game over to lazy interlopers!Go and work your cursed lands and leave us in peace.

  4. Useless people, where did d government get d money to develop the refinery when Nigeria first developed oil ? They got the money from the sales of palm oil from d east, cocoa, casava from d south west and nuts from the north. You useless people wasn't saying it was your oil then.Guess what, oil is worth nothing now,Lagos generates the highest VAT in the country but yet get the same allocations as any other states. The south south people get more allocations than any other state but yet have nothing to show.will they dare try this during the military era ? Buhari need to do what's necessary n forget trying to be democratic.Democracy can be dirty, but one must to do anything necessary for the common good. The government need to establish a kill squad like what d phillipinos are doing to the drug peddlers in their country. The kill squad need to start eliminating all this militants, their backers n financiers, the government need to extend that to the backers of Boko Haram, cattle herders as well too. They will not see it coming, but their bodies and blown brains should be broadcast on media platform to deter would be militants. We can't practice democracy in its present form in our country without some hints of dictatorship. We are use to alot of bad habits that isn't suitable for a democratic dispensation. All this looters needs to start getting taken out one by one.All this militants are in d creeks hiding and agitating for better condition and rightly so,but the backers are sleeping in their mansions enjoying their Ill gotten wealth at d detriment of the region.I really support the agitation for a better life at large for the region,I just don't buy into the crap that once the government settles this bastards, everything will be okay and the development, empowerment d region sorely need will be forgiven and neglected as soon as some thugs are paid to keep quiet and let the marginalisation continue. The government need to get their hands dirty,Nigerian will thank them later. We finally have the best man for the job if we can look past the ethnic differences. When was the last time any sitting president went after the powerful people that stole money ? The fact that's he is doing so makes me realise he has no skeleton in his closet because,we have a do me I do u mentality in our country, someone would've came up with something to discredit him by now.All those leaders in the south south need to be taken out one by one, then Nigeria must focus on developing that region to world standard, there is no excuse for that region to look like that while Abuja,Lagos are ritzy to some extent.I just don't buy into paying thugs so they can keep quiet and let the pillaging of the south south continue. If Jonathan is behind it,the government should go after him for treason,Any one behind the sabotaging of our country should be made to bare d full brunt of the law and that includes everyone from Pres buhari, tinubu, obj, get or whomever

    1. Please, translate to English this ramble you just posted, mumu. Palm oil, a bulk of which came from South South, oil producing states, was ours. Go back to school.

  8. How commercially viable compared to that of South-south was Western palm oil? At Ojuelegba bus stop you will find peddlers of Nigerian story books written by freelance authors in search of ends meet. Buy one that talks about Nigerian history pre and after pro-independence. It is 100 Naira at most. Readers are Leaders!
