MEND blasts Edwin Clark

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, on Sunday, slammed Ijaw National leader, Chief Edwin Clark for his position on the restructuring and ongoing militancy, saying that the elder statesman lacks the moral authority to be championing for restructuring of the country.

MEND, also alleged that Chief Clark and other leaders of the region kept quiet during the 6-year administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a statement by its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, on Sunday, the group called on the federal government to ignore the resolution reached at Friday’s Niger Delta stakeholders consultative meeting held at the PTI Conference Centre Effurun, Delta State.

The statement said among other things, that the leaders of the region failed to categorically condemn the criminal and treasonable activities of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) which has claimed responsibility for series of attacks on oil facilities in the region.

MEND while reiterating its support for the use of military against the militants in the region, said those who attended the meeting lack the capacity to persuade the people of the Niger Delta to support the current efforts of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to bring peace and development to the region

“The attention of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has been drawn to a meeting of the Niger Delta Coastal States held in Warri, Delta State on Friday, August 19, 2016. The meeting was jointly convened by elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

  2. MEND would stop at nothing to seek for relevance with the present administration. Until Niger Deltans realize that other ethnic nationalities have no regards for us, we will continue to be blind to reality. MEND should forget about the fact that they have lost out as the primus inter pares of militancy in the region and embrace the reality that others have supplanted them. Strategy involves diplomacy, force and economy. So far,the new militants have achieved the last two, and the first is currently unfolding. Take the back seat if you will, MEND. That is where you belong in the new scheme of things. Humility is a virtue!
