comptroller, Enugu state prisons, told journalists on Thursday that six of the escapee prisoners had been re-arrested.
The Nsukka Prisons, established several years ago, has original capacity of 168, but now accommodates 264 inmates.
The number of the inmates who escaped was earlier put at 15, though Amariri was yet to confirm the figure.
The Prisons boss, however, said the Nigeria Prison Service was collaborating with other security agencies and community vigilante groups to re-arrest the remaining inmates who are still at large.
According to him, “There was jail break in Nsukka prisons on Tuesday night between 12pm and 3am, in which many inmates escaped, though six of them have been
re-arrested.
“I cannot give the exact figure for now as investigations are still on; we will send our findings to the comptroller general of
prisons, who will make public the exact number and cause of the jail break.”
While vowing that any staff who aided the jailbreak would be brought to book, he added that, “The service is liaising with security agents and community vigilante groups to know the hide-out of those still on the run in order to re-arrest them.”
He added that “the prisons authorities are on top of the situation and will put measures in place to avoid a repeat of what happened on Tuesday night.
