Goodluck Jonathan planted seeds of recession into Nigeria's economy - Fashola

Nigeria's Minister for Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has stated that the current recession the country's economy is facing was caused by the previous Goodluck Jonathan led administration.

Speaking recently in London, Fashola said the previous administration allocated just 15% for capital projects in most of its budgets, which is a precursor to recession.

“Sometime in March 2015, a little over a year ago, before the Buhari government, a snap survey of four construction companies which I conducted revealed that they had laid off 5, 150 workers because government was not paying these construction companies for work done.”

Fashola said upon assumption of office that he had a meeting with contractors in the sector and discovered that they were owed between two to three years, which he described as seeds of recession, planted and nurtured between 2013 and 2014.

He however said the Muhammadu Buhari led government is doing everything in its power to turn things around.

“From N4 trillion average budget in a time of plenty, this administration set an ambitious N6 trillion with a 30 per cent capex. It pays serious attention to its budget as the article of faith that defines its commitment and since the 2016 budget was passed, construction companies that had demobilised from their sites and laid off workers due to lack of payment since 2014, had been re-mobilising to rail, road, power and other construction sites, and recalling workers.

  2. For God's sake when will APC leave Jonathan alone? Right from day one they came to power, everything has been blamed on Jonathan. I believe it is high time APC stopped this blame-game now that it is more than a year since they have been playing this blame-game and start fixing whatever problems they met. We are getting tired of this blame-game. All we need now is results and changes they promised.

  4. It's so shameful these failures continue to blame the past for their inabilities. What do we expect when a lawyer assumes the role of an engineer? Increase in electricity tariff and propagander. Humble yourself and learn on the job.

  5. Continue thinking and talking Goodluck until your tenure is up. Idiot! Clueless selfish incompetent and vision less fools. Nigerians are dying of hunger and hopelessness and you are more untested in adding to it by increasing taxes and tariff. Your toll gate is till coming. wicked Idiot...and your only pass time is to pass the buck by calling Goodluck. You people are indeed Badluck to Nigeria.

  10. I think Fasola is fairly intelligent more than he is exhibiting. He has joined his illiterate masters to continue campaign after election. We are watching.

  14. When Jonathan was in office Fashola u were able to function in Lagos, now that he is out of office you become a scalar quantity without direction. U were d only one I thought will perform, but now I am so disappointed in U. Humble urself and go an learn from d technocrat Goodluck EJ. When Buhari was compensating U a lawyer with the job of an engineer why did u not tell him that, that is out of order and miss appropriation of compensation? You, Buhari, Amechi, Tinubu, Lai Mohamed -that satan in human flesh, and others are all failure...You will all give account to your maker Allah/God on the day of judgement.

  15. I was of the opinion that these guys (APC) played the role of opposition because they saw all the ills of the past government and used them as campaign tool with the HUGE promises of fixing them, hence, CHANGE.

It's quite shameful and distasteful that after more than one year in government, these charlatans are still playing "GEJ screwed the country over" card. They made solving all Nigerians problem look so effortless and in Fashola's words "Any serious government, will fix her power problem within six months".

    RUBBISH!

  16. Does it means this government can't fix anything? Have you ever heard this kind of statement from the past administration before Jonathan. Did Jonathan said obasanjo administration was d reason why wouldn't be able to do anything. The past administration used the best technical know how in each ministry. Despite d corruption level against them they still performed.

  18. A lazy fighter always gives an excuses that he was beaten by team of opponent. Would there have been need to seek education if your parent gave birth to your educated? What makes a man a true winner is his ability to turn problems around. Even GOD almighty at the beginning was confronted with absolute darkness and Void! Never read HE blamed it on anybody. GOD moved on in his wisdom to change the urgly situation that confronted HIM. I would conclude that the present administration are full of visionless guys if this blame game is not brought to a quick stop. However I pray that GOD enlighten your hearts.

  20. Fash ola is still campaigning 15mths after APC took over power. This man is daily diminishing his legacy with this politicking and failure to perform. The scam he left known as the Lekki tollgate stinks to high heavens. I just went to the east for the first time in years and saw all the fly overs that were recently built at a place called AWKA to ease traffic yet LCC and later LASG who paid-off LCC N80billion to buy back the tolls did not build one single flyover on the Lekki Expressway. Instead they went about building massive round abouts so they can earn income from gigantic billboards at the expense of the citizens. Don't know when last the streetlights on that road worked.

  21. Mr. Minister and APC caucus should by now realised their great mistake when a lawyer was chosen to occupy a position meant for ENGINEERS. Of course, it is not a surprise that the ministry will not successed. Barr.Fashola, SAN, please you are at liberty to hands off and surrender the portfolio to whoever that may have given you the big hook on your throat.

As for APC govt in general, it is a gross disappointment to the nation in and out. There thought was to jump into the wealth of the Nation and start shearing as usual but it seems that time failed APC. Oil industry is no longer lucrative for them to shear the proceed. What do you expect from APC, a good report of GEJ lead administration for which must of the APC today were in cabinet, then you are joking.

Nigerians are indeed not interested in much APC excuses liken it to GEJ and PDP last administration failures. If not for any reason while all of you should give respect to Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, think about his LOVE for this country, which I doubt this present govt, will ever displayed.

As for Electricity, the past administration set up the platform for what we are see today. APC govt. only increase tariff in their quest to solve problem but that compounded it. 1$ to N1.00 is now 1$ to N400. N87.00/liter of fuel is today N145/lit against your campaign promise. Before APC govt, there were food on our tables but today starvation and untold famine is the order. Oh1 is this the CHANGE? APC are you still in governance do you understand what it meant to rule a nation like this of ours? It is a time for you to have a re-think.

  22. Fashola, before you loose the little respect that people still have for you; you better resign or just keep quiet and hide your face as failures do.
Where are all the noise you made during Jonathan time. SHAME.

  23. All of you are talking rubish. The man said no contractors was paid for the last three years. But now those that have been laid off are now back on the site and amany who are jobless before are now having their jobs back. Now can you start a road withing one year and finish it. The issue is that Lagos can work within one year and Ambode is working and we can see it. But for a large place like NIgeria their work can never be noticeable within a year. The issue is that workers are now back. If you can make your wife to born baby within 3 months then you can take over from Fashola. Most of you have lost your senses that you are not better than Israelite who wanted to go back to Egypt. Well the coast is clear for you in 2019 and I wish you good bye to People destroy people party.
