Despite his denial, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has been allegedly fingered in the formation and activities of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).
Also, findings by the security have confirmed that oil installations were mined before the May 29, 2015 handover to President Muhammadu Buhari.
These are the basic points of intelligence report, already made available to the Presidency but which is still being studied.
Last August 7, Jonathan denied having any links with NDA, restating his commitment to the nation’s unity.
The intelligence gathering was said to be a confirmation of a similar claim by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta(MEND).
According to a top intelligence source, who spoke in confidence last night, the NDA was formed as a Plan B option before the 2015 general election.
The source said the initial plan was to ask the NDA to declare Niger Delta Republic immediately after Jonathan’s defeat but the ex-President was believed to have prevailed on the group to shelve the idea.
The NDA was said to have been resuscitated after the Federal Government launched a massive probe into the mismanagement of the oil sector.
The revelations from the probe were said to have overwhelmed the ex-President, who felt he and ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan were being targeted.
The source said: “We have intelligence report that it is true that the ex-President has been meeting with the NDA militants before the general election.
“The initial plan was to declare Niger Delta Republic after Jonathan’s electoral loss but the NDA members were taken aback when the ex-President conceded.
“Findings confirmed that the ex-President and others being probed, resuscitated the NDA plan when the Federal Government initiated a probe into the oil sector.
“We suspect that the ex-President is afraid that the way the investigation in the oil industry was going, he and his wife will be questioned.
“The fact that some of the conditions put forward by the NDA, including not going after Government Ekpemuopolo Tompolo, and stopping investigation of all corruption probes, have confirmed some of the intelligence.
Responding to a question, the source added: “Intelligence report also showed that the evidence of the attacks of oil installations was planned before May 29. The NDA and other militants had mined these installations before the handover.
“But following the probe of the oil sector, they were mandated to start detonating it.
The source added: “Intelligence report also indicated that a former Coordinator of Amnesty Programme Kingsley Kuku and a former National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh might have played some key roles in the formation and operation of NDA.”
But both Metuh and Kuku have also denied any role in the activities of NDA.
When contacted, a high-ranking government source, who wants to remain anonymous, said: “It has been known in government circles that Jonathan may be behind the NDA. The speed with which he denied the allegation spoke volumes.
“Despite the denial, the allegations have refused to go away.
“His allegation that MEND is after him is to divert attention from his roles as the mastermind of the NDA . His morbid fear of being investigated alongside his wife is behind what is going on. ReplyDeleteThis is not logical. I cannot connect the dots of these revelations. Why would GEJ need a plan B when the election results could have been upturned while he was in power. Let us understand that the election outcome was neither here nor there, though tilting more in favour of APC. It could have been subjected to IBB's style more successfully. While holding on to power, he could have used the well-armed NDA as a leverage. NDA would have been more effective while in power.

The question is, is it today that militancy started in Niger Delta? Even from Babangida to Yaradua regims there was. So who was behind them, Jonathan and all those other people named? Or is it that those who sponsored before handed over to these ones suddenly during this Buhari's regime?. This report is too cheap to believe as it lacks concrete evidence though capable of tarnishing someone's image. Buhari should not forget that even Boko aram and the so called Sahara news Report fingered him as one of Boko-aram's members with reasonable evidence but Jonathan acted majoredly. So if he (Buhari) is planning against Jonathan, he should not forget that Jonathan provided security for him when he was raising a false allegation that Boko-aram wanted to kill him. It is high time he (Buhari) stopped nepotism and focus his attention on the Nigeria economy to help the poor masses who are dying rather than finding excuses for his incompetency by drawing attention to false information.

There is no way an individual who was head of the entire armed forces, police, DSS, SSS, Civil Defense, Customs, immigration just name it and could have used them to perpetuate all the evils he wanted, opted to give that power all away only to go arm a few thugs to defend him. He must have smoked some very stale batch of weed to have taught of that.
2. If Jonathan was indeed the chief sponsor of DNA as MEND is trying to claim, international foreign intelligence agencies who are good at leaking sensitive information would have done that by now. If while he was in power wikileaks told us Mama P wore the pants, is it when he has left office they would be scared of telling us he sponsors NDA. Amnesty international is another good example of exposing secrets, UN and a whole lot more.
3. That he is well respected today and sent on international duties by reputable international bodies redicules any possibility of him being a sponsor of NDA. They must have done a background check on him before deciding to associate with him. Please why has no international agency approached IBB to carry out an assignment for them.
I advise MEND to look for better and more creative ways of going to get their leaders freed from jail. This bait carries no potency.

However, remember a letter written by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo challenging former President Jonathan of training guerillas for war/fighting. President Obasanjo is someone I respect so much because he does not say anything without an evidence. So there might be something in this report that President Jonathan sponsored these agitators. He might not be the champion but his administration night be the one in charge. For instance, look at how Mr. Peter Godsday Orubebe wanted to scuttle the elections during the broadcast of results. Good enough, God's will prevailed.
