Buhari’s emergency power bill: We’ll react when we read the report – senators

Nigerian senators are mute over the speculated report that a bill aimed at given President Muhammadu Buhari emergency sweeping powers to source money to stimulate the country’s ailing economy was in the offing, saying they have not read the report of the bill and so cannot talk.
Most senators contacted to react said they were yet to read the report, pleading that they be given time to read the report on the bill before reaction. Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, representing Abia North Senatorial Zone, on the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, told newsmen that he was not yet privy to the report on the president’s proposed bill, asking to be allowed to go through dailies that carried the report before making comments.
”To be sincere, I am not aware of what you are saying. However, I plead that you give me some time to go through the papers that pick the report before making comment, “he said.
Also, Senator Sunday Ogbuoji, representing Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone on the PDP platform, said he could only react to the proposed bill after going through the report, asking the reporter to avail him more time to source for the information before making comment. “Well, I have not read the document and so, I am not very competent to comment on it for now.
“I think that for now, there’s no need for reaction because as far as I’m concerned, it’s still a mere speculation. I will be competent to make my contribution on that issue when I see the document, “he said. Recall that report emanated in some national dailies, Monday, that President Muhammadu Buhari will be seeking emergency powers from the National Assembly to push his planned stimulus for the economy.
The objectives of the action-plan on the economy, which is in recession,a according to the report, included shoring up the value of the naira, creation of more jobs, boosting of foreign reserves, reviving the manufacturing sector and improving power. The executive bill, said to be titled: “Emergency Economic Stabilisation Bill 2016”, is reportedly being put in place by the president, preparatory to presentation to the National Assembly upon resumption, slated for September 12.
