Brazil 2-0 Colombia: Neymar scores in feisty all-South American tie


In the final men’s quarterfinal match of the day, Brazil defeated Colombia 2-0 to advance to the semifinals.


Brazil’s captain Neymar opened the scoring in the 12th minute off a long range free kick. It was the star’s first goal at the 2016 Olympics.

In the 25th minute, Colombia had its best chance to equalize as the ball feel to Helibelton Palacios at the top of the box, but he sent his shot over the goal.

The two teams played a very physical first half with five yellow cards, four of which went to Colombia. Both teams delivered hard challenges that created a very tense atmosphere.

In the 65th minute- Neymar sent a free kick toward Rodrigo Caio who headed the ball toward goal, but it was saved by Colombian goalkeeper Cristian Bonilla.

Then, with less than 10 minutes left in the match Luan doubled Brazil’s lead with a dipping shot from about 25 yards out.

Brazil was able to hold its lead for the remainder of the match as it won 2-0.

Brazil will face Honduras in the semifinals on Wednesday, Aug. 17. Colombia is eliminated from Olympic competition.
