Wimbledon: Federer and Cilic advance into quarter-finals

Swiss Tennis star Roger Federer has qualified for the quarter-finals of Wimbledon after a 6-2 6-3 7-5 win against Steve Johnson on Monday.

The Swiss great will face Marin Cilic, who had earlier benefitted from Kei Nishikori's retirement due to injury, in the last eight.

Federer's path towards an eighth Wimbledon title should have been made easier after Novak Djokovic's shock elimination and the veteran played like he was unaware of the additional pressure against Johnson in the fourth round.

The writing appeared to be on the wall for American Johnson when Federer romped to the first set within half an hour.

An early break for the 34-year-old in the second set allowed him to drive towards a swift 4-1 lead, from which the world No 29 could not recover.

Johnson did manage a break in the third set but Federer matched him to level the scores at 3-3 before wrapping up a straight sets win with a tie-break.

Cilic was the beneficiary of a rib injury to Nishikori that forced the Japanese player out of their match, and out of Wimbledon.

Former US Open winner Cilic took the first set 6-1 within just 16 minutes when it became clear his opponent was struggling physically. Nishikori won two points in the first five games.

Cilic was 4-1 ahead in the second set when Nishikori, who has been plagued by injury throughout his career, was forced to throw in the towel.

Sam Querrey, who eliminated Djokovic last week, has built on his famous win by also advancing into the last eight. He won 6-4 7-6 6-4 against Nicolas Mahut.
