The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has defended his decision to stick to a prepared speech when he flagged off his campaign, saying it is because of his burning desire to be accountable to the people based on his electoral promises.
Obaseki said he wanted Edo people to have a documented evidence of his electoral promises for them to hold him accountable.
He spoke through the Coordinator of his campaign organisation, Mr. Osakue Aiyevbekpen, while playing host to some support groups that were at the campaign office on a solidarity visit.
The APC flag bearer said the criticisms that trailed his reading from a prepared speech were done by persons he described as hired political town-criers that go about spreading falsehood to confuse the people.
He stated that he is the most intelligent, vocal and eloquent among all the candidates vying to occupy Osadebey Avenue, the Edo State seat of power.
He said: “It is very unfortunate and disappointing when people ask why was Godwin Obaseki reading his speech, instead of speaking extempore. If you were at the stadium, you will understand that what he read was far more than a speech, but a fundamental policy statement in form of a manifesto that was presented by him as a contract document, which by virtue of reading it to the hearing of the people has become an undeniable signed contract document with them.
“He decided to present it in that manner, so that whatever he has promised will be on a documented paper which will be difficult to distort or misquote out of context by detractors.
“Those in the opposition have lost touch with reality on how to market their candidate and have resorted to town-criers whose business is to dish out propaganda, with the mind set of diverting the attention of the suspecting public away from the actual issues that confront our dear state and thereby create bad blood amongst the good people of Edo. Godwin Obaseki is a disgrace to Edo People. All present during your campaign Godwin was the only one that read prepared written speech that is a big indication that you are not fit to lead.
