The Federal Government on Wednesday admitted that it is aware of “serious shortage of foods” in many families in the country.
The Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Chief Audu Ogbeh, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Ogbeh was joined at the briefing by the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan and the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.
The minister said it was heartwarming that despite the food shortage, the situation in the country was still not close to that of Venezuela that can no longer feed its people.
He said the present administration was working hard to address the food shortage.
He gave an assurance that in the next one-and-half years, Nigeria would be self-sufficient in grains like rice, beans and others.
To this end, he said the council approved the Agriculture Promotion Policy 2016-2020 tagged The Green Alternative.
He said the 129-page detailed document outlines the government’s policies and objectives to see agriculture as the best alternative in the administration’s quest to diversify the economy.
He said, “We are fully aware that there is a major concern in the country for food self-sufficiency in the country and that there is crisis in many families as a result of serious shortage of food.
“But we are working hard and thank God that ours has not become as bad as one South American country, which was also a major oil producing country. By that I mean Venezuela which situation is definitely a 100 times worst than ours.
“But the point is that where we believe that in a short while, maybe in another one year and half in the maximum, we should be reasonably self-sufficient in grains like rice, maize and beans.
“We may not achieve everything in wheat but we will be very close to our targets. Other things are also there in the roadmap. And that is what council endorsed this afternoon.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

The minister said it was heartwarming that despite the food shortage, the situation in the country was still not close to that of Venezuela that can no longer feed its people. So we should be thankful to you?
ReplyDeleteAudu Ogbe is nothing but a mediocre. How many families have u visited that made u believe ours is not as worst as Venezuela? I believe you know how many children and women die everyday in IDP camp in the eye of hunger and you are aware of this. We are only enjoying God's grace in Nigeria not the concern-less governance of you people. Shameless Elders.
ReplyDeleteAPC, the party with as many mouths as is conveniently possible....Adesina said the exact opposite
ReplyDeletewhat a pity i think they said grey head is synonymous to wisdom, ogbe i want to also say to you that it is also heartwarming that where you think you can find wisdom but instead it is full of foolishness.may God judge all of you.
ReplyDeleteI am not hungry and I can never be hungry plus my family, God is wonderful to me,i don't know about u. Mek u na keep with u na lengthy speeches, may be we can give u second tenure to achieve that.
ReplyDeleteI am disappointed the way the country Nigeria is ran. As at today Nigeria seem to me as the worse country in the world despite its blessed landscape. I'm surprised that at the very terrible state of the country many elites are not asking question only for a hand few who are demonized by those in favor of the ruling party and no civil protest for the hardship the masses a going through like what happens in developed society. I no that for our kind of county people only make reference to developed societies when it soot them.
ReplyDeleteIn fact my view without is that there is no significant economic development going on the country. All i see is some part of the south west still comfortable with the system due to their individual interest and part of the North trying to defend the own in power while some part of the west like Ekiti and Ondo state, with the south east and south south south aggrieved that their own has be wrongly taking, complaining of marginalization by the ruling party. With this the masses are left armless to defend the mandate they voted for and oppose strange government policies anemically to their existence.
For sure, i don't see any rapid developing coming the way of Nigeria in the next 100 years if we continue like this. It is time for us as a people to collectively fight the only dragon before us; Bad leadership.
Whether you voted for a particular party or not. Let's take a queue from the developed climes; they vote a government in and if not delivering, they are removed "no sentiment attached" but all in the interest of the country. And that is why their country continue advancing while we visit and enjoy their legacies.
I pity for the county called Nigeria.
You people are too old for this job, we pray for time up for all the APCs' Caucus and those who doesn't have nothing to offer this country
ReplyDeleteNigeria has unproductive population and it comes from the zones that want everthing free, though they have been getting it. If we practice true federalism it will be like a lazy man who I'd constantly being wake-up by hunger. Even the president knows the only way out is true federalism
