Steve Bruce quits as manager of Hull City

Steve Bruce has quit as Hull City manager, furious about the lack of investment in new players this summer.

Bruce has had an increasingly difficult relationship with vice chairman Ehab Allam, the son of owner Assem, and Telegraph Sport revealed earlier this month that he was considering his future.

Sources close to the former Manchester United captain have told Telegraph Sport that things deteriorated so badly that Bruce felt he was being prevented from doing his job properly and suspected they were trying to provoke him into quitting.

The 55-year-old has rarely spoken to anyone on the board since returning for pre-season training three weeks ago and his isolation has been so bad that he even struggled to get hold of anyone to tell them the FA wanted to interview him about the England job last week.

Bruce was proud to have been given the opportunity to discuss his plans for the national team, but missed out on replacing Roy Hodgson when it was offered to his close friend, Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce.

Bruce is understood to have offered his resignation on Thursday morning, but talks were brokered by Assem Allam in an effort to heal the rift created. The owner has been suffering from poor health and no longer has much involvement in the day-to-day running of the club, but Bruce has retained an affection for the Egyptian.

Bruce, though, remains unhappy and could not understand why he was not allowed to sign any new players, despite setting up several deals. Although he was willing to give the board more time to bring in the targets he had identified over the summer - after first contemplating quitting back in June - he was repeatedly stalled when he asked about the progress being made.

The former Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland boss is the most successful manager in Hull’s history, winning promotion to the Premier League twice, as well as taking the Tigers to their first FA Cup Final two years ago.

Hull supporters will be angry about his departure, which comes just days after the club announced it was suspending takeover talks until after the close of the transfer window.

Hull were put up for sale several months ago and the Allam family have been negotiating with several interested parties over the summer. Those talks are now on hold until September.
