Rerun election takes off smoothly in Imo

The re-run elections for Okigwe senatorial zone and state assembly seats for Isiala Mbano, Oru East and Owerri West, took off Saturday on a peaceful note.

Palpable apathy was witnessed in most of the polling units visited today in Okigwe senatorial zone, even as some of the villagers were not very forthcoming in explaining the development.

A female voter at Osu Achara Ward, Isiala Mbano local council area, who simply identified herself as Prisca, said that although she was not in a position to fully explain the people’s apathy, however was of the opinion that the situation might improve with time.

“The turnout of voters was better in the last election. What we are seeing today (yesterday) is a far cry from the precious experience. I am only hoping that the situation might improve before the end of voting”, Prisca said.

As at 12.43pm yesterday, when the first report was filed from Osu Achara Ward, there was no recorded incident of violence.

When contacted on his mobile line, the Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, who temporarily moved his Command’s Headquarters to Okigwe, confirmed that “there has been no reported case of violence anywhere in the affected areas”.

While saying that he has his men are on red alert, the Imo police boss also said that the Command was ready to tackle any eventuality, wherever and whenever it rears its ugly head.

“There is no recorded violence in any of the areas where the re-run election is taking place. Our men are everywhere and ready to promptly tackle any incident, whenever and wherever I rears its ugly head”, the CP said.
As at the time of going to press, voting had smoothly commenced in the polling units visited.
