Police arrest 40 suspects in Ogun over cult killings

About 40 suspects have been arrested in different parts of Ogun State by police over killings of 11 persons allegedly carried out by suspected members of Aye Confraternity cult at Igode and Fakale communities, in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state, on Wednesday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the suspects were arrested in Sagamu, Ijebu Igbo, Emuren, and Ago Iwoye. It had been reported that in the attack on the two communities, no fewer than 11 persons were reportedly shot dead.

According to Adejobi, 17 out of those 40 suspects were arrested at Emuren axis and the remaining ones were nabbed at Ijebu Igbo, and Ago Iwoye. Adejobi further explained that the state command received information that the Aye Confraternity members were mobilising to attack Sagamu again on Friday, but, the command has instructed the Divisional Police Officer in Sagamu, to man the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode highway.

He said the command also had a hint that some traditional rulers in the affected communities were aiding the cult groups, warning that any of them found culpable would be dealt with according to the law. He recalled that the cause of the fracas was the killing of a goat of a rival group that was preparing for a festival.
