OFFICIAL: Vicente del bosque steps down as spain coach

Vicente del Bosque's glorious reign as Spain coach has come to an end.

The Spanish FA confirmed on Monday lunchtime that the 65-year-old has stepped down after a meeting with federation president Angel Maria Villar.

Del Bosque's side were eliminated from Euro 2016 by Italy last week, bringing the curtain down on a glorious era.

The former Real Madrid boss guided La Furia Roja to the 2010 World Cup and followed that success up with victory at Euro 2012.

But Spain were knocked out of the Brazil World Cup at the group stage two years ago and failed to hit top gear again in France this summer.

Del Bosque denied that defeat to Italy was the end of an era , but has now stepped aside.

A statement from the Spanish FA (RFEF) read: "The RFEF president, Angel Maria Villar and the national team coach, Vicente del Bosque, today had a meeting in Madrid, in which the coach expressed his desire to stand down from his role.

"Villar considers Del Bosque to be an icon of Spanish football and offered him the chance to continue working with the federation, which was accepted. The offer will be firmed up in the weeks ahead."

Joaquin Caparros, the surprise favourite, has admitted the job would be too good to turn down should he be approached.

The 60-year-old is the front-runner to take over La Roja despite a fairly up-and-down managerial record in recent seasons.

And when asked by AS about the soon-to-be vacant post, Caparros said:

"If the Federation need me, I'll happily step forward.

“I don't know whether they will call but Villar already knows that I am fully at the Federation's disposal."
