Niger-Delta militants angry over Osinbajo’s comment, vow to resume attacks

Three militant groups – Niger Delta Volunteers, Niger Delta Peoples Liberation Movement, and Bakassi Freedom Fighters – have criticised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo saying that militants were fighting for their pockets.

Osinbajo had reportedly accused the militants of being partly responsible for the economic woes of the country, while delivering a lecture at Elizade University in Ondo State.

The militant groups, however, said instead of ridiculing them, the vice president should have advised President Muhammadu Buhari to address the injustice in the Niger Delta.

They made their grievances known in a statement signed by their spokespersons – Ekpo Ekpo for NDV; Henry Etete for NDPLF and Asukwo Henshaw for BFF.

In the statement, which was made available to journalists in Uyo on Tuesday, the militant groups also criticised Buhari for saying that Nigeria’s unity was not negotiable.

They added that the people of the Niger Delta were tired of one Nigeria filled with injustice, marginalisation and oppression minority ethnic groups.

As a result, they vowed to resume attacks against oil companies operating in the region and they urged oil unions to withdraw their members from rigs and platforms for their safety during the period.

The groups also condemned the newly constituted Board of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company and demanded the appointment of someone from the Niger Delta as GMD.

“It is an insult on the Niger Delta region that the Minister of Petroleum who also doubles as the President of Nigeria is from the North, the Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru and four other members of the board are also from the North,” they said.

Furthermore, the group asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate what happens to local government funds in Akwa Ibom State.

This, they said, was because in the past one year there local government area in the state had carried out people-oriented projects.

  1. The truth can be painful atimes but still has to be told.
It's obvious that the militants are simply fighting for their selfish interests. They never raised up arms while their brother Jonathan was in charge because they were getting some coins to play around with without any meaning development to the region whatsoever.
But Buhari that has taken steps so far in addressing the region's problems is the bad leader. These militants are simply blockheads!

  2. Listen, the truth is always bitter. If Jonathan had decided to develop his area, Niger Delta, the majority tribes in Nigeria would have ganged up to impeached him because he was from the Minority. So, he was ruling with care. How many times did they not threaten to impeach him for just a minor thing talkless of paying more attention to his area? Is it not Buhari who increase the fuel price highly from N87.00 (where Johnathan left it) to N145 yet nothing happened, why because he is from the majority? Is it not Buhari who appoints almost all members of his carbonates especially in the area of security from the North, yet nothing happens? Let a minority person come and do that, then you will see what will happen. Has Buhari not abuse the rule of law in many instances and even presently violating the immunity clause of a seating governor, yet nothing happens. Let a minority leader come and try that, then you will see. In all these, you will realised that the major tribes except the Iboes are paying lip service to ""one Nigeria"". As for me I would say let justice be done or Nigeria be divided

  3. Your ilk should be ignored. You do not address a person's problem by giving him a tiny fraction of his property, whereas he can solve his problem without intervention from a third party, dummy!
