'Forget about Nigeria breaking up' - Buhari tells pro-Biafra protesters, militants

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday sent a message to some restive groups – they should forget about Nigeria breaking up.

The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA)have been attacking oil facilities. The Indigenous People of Biafra and the Movement for the Emancipation of Biafra (MASSOB) have been pushing for a Biafra State, independent of Nigeria.

But, Buhari insists that Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable.

IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, who is also the director of the separatist and illegal Radio Biafra, is on trial for alleged treason, among other charges

The president was emphatic yesterday that anybody seeking the break-up of the country should perish the thought.

He spoke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja when Federal Capital Territory (FCT) residents paid him an Eid-el-Fitri homage.

The President said the slogan in the 1970s, “Go On With One Nigeria” (GOWON), is very apt now as keeping Nigeria one is a task that must be done”.

He urged the militants to give peace a chance.

Noting that there is a lot of improvement on security in the Northeast, Buhari said the attention has now shifted to the Niger Delta.

He said: “On security, we have made a lot of improvement. There is improvement in the battle against Boko Haram. We are now concentrating on the militants to know how many of them in terms of groupings, leadership and plead with them to try and give Nigeria a chance.

“I assure them that the saying by Gen. Yakubu Gowon (a former Head of State) that ‘to keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done is still relevant. In those days, we never thought of oil, all we were concerned about was one Nigeria. So, please pass this on to the militants – that one Nigeria is not for negotiation and they had better accept it.

“The Nigerian Constitution is clear as to what they should get and I assure them there will be justice.”

Buhari urged those with plenty of money which does not belong to them to negotiate and return it in peace.

“So that both they and us will be in peace; otherwise, we will continue to look for it,” the President added

To solve some of the problems of agriculture, he said Minister of Agriculture Audu Ogbeh was working very hard with Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele to ensure that 13 states start rice production..

According to him, the programme is good and giving the country confidence while many farmers are already going back to the field.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said the past one year had been tough, adding that the administration was busy clearing the mess it met.

He stressed the administration’s commitment to placing the country on a sound footing, acknowledging that things were already looking up.

Minister of FCT Mohammed Bello, who led the delegation, prayed for God’s wisdom, good health and success for the President.

The President was presented with Sallah greeting cards and a mirror.

At the ceremony were Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir David Lawal; Primate of the Church of Nigerian (Anglican Communion) rev. Nicholas Okoh; Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu; Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar; National Security Adviser Babagana Mongunu and Acting Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris.

The Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), FCT Chapter, Israel Akanji and Dr. Kabir Adam of the National Mosque, Abuja were also part of the delegation.

It is entities like you that God in His loving abundance will not respect for seeking to break that which HE had created.

  9. They found oil before the war and that is the information nigeria got that made them discard the aburi accord and go to war. The problem is that people do not know of thier own history so such bigots who think they a gods can lie to them and shout one Nigeria by force. Who is he thinking he is? God?

  16. Let's look at one of the major reasons for the agitations. In the 70s through the 90s, there were little or no agitations for self-determination. Why is it that the issue for agitation suddenly jumps to a very high level as soon as PMB came into power. The main reason is the murderous activities of the the marauding Fulani herdsmen on their peaceful host communities in the SE and SS coupled with the diplomatic silence of PMB (a Fulani) on these killings as if the killers are on assignment. The killers have often been had saying that "nothing will happen". Those in the military and paramilitary will also repeat same that 'nothing will happen''and trully nothing happens to them. Those ever arrested will after sometime be released and they start another round of killings. N one of them has ever been punished or sentenced by the law. Are they above the law?
No past President of this Country had ever remained silence in situations like this than PMB himself. His attitude and mindset about the entire people of SE is the root cause of these agitations.
Secondly, is the systematic scheming out of the people of SE from the governance of this country. Records are still showing that Nigerians of other regions besides SE are fantastically more corrupt in terms of looting of public treasury. The people of SE are more friendly and blend faster with their neighbours in harmonious relationship than the other way round. Under the watch of PMB, the people of SE have come to realize fully that there was a 'victor' and there was a 'vanquish' such that any submission by SEtner during a democratic/public debate has always been jettisoned as a 'Biafran Agenda' only for such initiative to be represented by her neigboures and it will be accepted. When someone is totally neglected and abandoned by the other members of the household, the person will naturally assume a rebellious behaviour and such household shall hardly be at peace.
PMB should drop a vindictive/vengeance display of power but extend a hand of friendlyness to the people of SE and bring them back to the mainstream of governance and see if the voting pattern and agitation will not change going forward. Ex Presidents Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obansanjo should join in this vanguard if really they mean no victor, no vanquish. The more you punish the SEters, the more their Children will query the source/cause of the hatred for the punishment, the more they feel unwanted and the more their quest for self determination shall persist. They will become more hardened because they know that they will be killed. Death will no longer deter them.

  20. There are too many tribes under Nigeria and we don't get along and will never get along. There is too much tribalism and less patriotism. For these reasons, we should break up. If people who claim that they own Lagos are telling their Nigeria brothers such as the Igbos and Hausas to go back to their own states, how is that going to make us ONE Nigeria? That is more like DIVIDED Nigeria. Some of us cannot even get a job or promotion in one state because of our name even though we may have been born and lived and paid taxes in that state all our lives. It is time we stop pretending that we are ONE Nigeria. The truth is we are not ONE.
