The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Friday warned disgruntled members of the party who are contemplating defecting to other parties to, in their own interest, think twice before taking such a decision.
According to reports, the Ekiti state Chairman of the party, Mr Gboyega Oguntuase said at a news conference in Ado Ekiti that such potential defectors must learn from the regrets being suffered by those who made such error in the past.
He stated that the series of trials being faced by the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, a one-time PDP member and his co- travelers after engaging in mass defection from PDP to All Progressives Congress, APC, was enough a lesson.
Oguntuase, a legal practitioner and former Commissioner for Information in the state, stressed that those planning to dump the party must also be aware that similar fate shall be their lot if they failed to drop such idea.
While also speaking against the backdrop of the factionalisation and supremacy crisis in the party both at national and some state chapters, he said the party would no longer tolerate rebellious actions from members, no matter how highly placed.
He advised those belonging to the various factions to retrace their steps before it is too late.
According to him, “It is no longer profitable to leave a democratic party like the PDP and defect to other parties.
“The sad news is that some of the parties to which they are defecting are too sectional and discriminating’ to accommodate defectors from PDP.”
The Chairman also denied the widespread insinuation that the party executive in Ekiti state was being tele-guided and largely subsumed by Governor Ayo Fayose.
He said, “Those of us who had worked for years with the governor knew him to be a man that believes in other people’s opinion, he was never a dictator and can never be.
“So, to say that he is teleguiding us as a party is out of place.
“The government and the party structures are different, but we are working together towards making Ekiti great,” he maintained.
Oguntuase assured that the party would continue to engage the aggrieved members nationwide and bring them on board, clarifying that the party was not in any way rattled by the gale of defections hitting it.
“The court has ruled that Ali Modu Sheriff faction is not in existence, so I expect him to toe the line of reason and join the mainstream.
“Particularly about the faction in Ekiti, I want to say that there is only one indivisible PDP in Ekiti, those on the other side are only being propelled by certain inordinate ambitions,” Oguntuase said.
