37-year-old man arrested after drone interrupts Liverpool's pre-season game

Police have arrested a man after the pre-season clash between Liverpool and Huddersfield was halted by a drone on Wednesday evening.

The Reds ran out 2-0 winners at the John Smith's Stadium to secure a fourth successive pre-season victory, lifting the Bill Shankly Trophy thanks to goals from Marko Grujic and Alberto Moreno.

But play was stopped in the 61st minute when a drone was spotted hovering above the pitch, triggering fears for players' safety to the displeasure of Reds chief Jurgen Klopp.

Police officers were sent to investigate the aerial intruder and the pilot was identified.

The drone was seized before the referee allowed play to continue.

West Yorkshire Police have declared that a 37-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

Liverpool claimed victory as Klopp was reunited with former Borussia Dortmund cohort David Wagner, who joined the Terriers as manager last season.

Midfielder Grujic again impressed in central midfield and scored for the second successive game, rifling home Sadio Mane's cross home after the forward had been sent free down the right by Dejan Lovren.

After the drone halted play, the Reds bizarrely sent substitute keeper Shamal George to play up front after Lucas Leiva went off injured, with Klopp having used all his outfield substitutes.

Spanish full-back Alberto Moreno secured victory in the 89th minute, converting from the penalty spot.
