Nigeria May Review Law On Same Sex Marriage, Says Ex-President Jonathan

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday said Nigeria may revisit the law that banned same-sex marriages.

He said as the quest for Nigerians and other citizens worldwide to have equal rights deepens, there is need for Nigeria to appropriately revisit the law.

Jonathan said this at a forum in Bloomberg’s European headquarters in London.
According to him, “When it comes to equality, we must all have the same rights as Nigerian citizens.

“The nation may at the appropriate time revisit the law in the light of deepening debates for all Nigerians and other citizens of the world to be treated equally and without discrimination and with the clear knowledge that the issue of sexual orientation is still evolving.”

It would be recalled that in January 2014, Jonathan signed into law the Bill which outlaws same sex marriage, gay groups and public displays of affection by homosexuals.
The signed bill says the gays; lesbians in Nigeria will risk a 14-year jail term if they do not retrace their steps and renounce such marriage.

Also, any person who operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organisations directly or indirectly will earn a 10-year imprisonment.

Those who administer witness, abet or aid the solemnization of a same sex marriage are going to bag a 10-year jail term.

The decision, however, triggered condemnation by religious leaders, human rights groups and Western governments.

  2. Those who the gods want to punish they first make them mad, GEJ thinks the west will help secure soft landing in the corruption case against him . A way of wooing the west to prevail on PMB to soft pedal on his enormous corruption case. GEJ, you must face the music

  7. Some of u don't seem to have good sense of reasoning. GEJ said the law may be revisited does not mean that he (GEJ) wants to reverse the law. Afterall he's not in position to change it. Probably he (GEJ) has information that the APC -led federal govt wants to revisit the anti gay law. U guys shud think well.

    1. You are the one that doesn't have sense of reasoning, you read the news probably doesn't believe it but instead of telling yourself the truth you decided to twist the gist and point it to APC to suit your mind.Goodluck was the one that sent the bill to the national assembly during his tenure and the National Assembly did a good job by doing what Nigerians wants and Goodluck was pressured to sign it into law by Nigerian if he want to win second tenure. Western world pressured him not to sign it but because he want send tenure he has to sign it because that's what Nigerians want and everybody applauded him for doing that.
Now maybe he's trying to look good before the western world that's why he said that Nigerian may revisit the gay law again knowing fully well that's it's a lie.
He doesn't meant what he said,he know it's a lie but he doesn't want the western world to hate him for signing the law when they asked him not to. Remember he's a Nigerian and he still has Nigerian sense. We always tell stories to cross the road. If you were him you will do the same thing, he needs the western world now, he has to be saying what they like and they will be happy with him, they don't have our kind of brain you can easily convince/deceive them.

  9. Guys I want everyone to know that Goodluck know what he is doing. He knows it's a lie but he has to look good to the western world. He's telling them what they want to hear so that they will allow him to come to their country to rest or hide. Remember they pressured him not to sign the law but he did it because that's what Nigerians want and we loved him for signing the law into law. He know we loved him for signing the law.
