Governor Mimiko begs Ondo workers to end strike

As the strike action embarked upon by workers in Ondo state entered its eighth day today, governor Olusegun Mimiko yesterday appealed to the workers to bear with the state government and resume work.

Dr Mimiko promised to pay the workers and the pensioners in full very soon. He said most state governor’s found it difficult to pay workers salaries because the allocation the states were getting from Abuja currently was not enough to run the government.

Dr Mimiko said that;”It is only restructuring that would solve the issue whereby the state government would be allowed to control their own resources. “ The situation in our country today is the totality of our income is not up to one-third of our salary and if we don’t run the government we will need three months allocation to pay one month salary. “ We used to a federal system before the military came but the advent of the military over the years have centralized our resources.

“I have said it several times and I am happy now many people are seeing it that the only way for us as a nation to face the quantum leap of development is to restructure this country.”

Meanwhile, workers in the state have insisted that they are not in a hurry to call off the strike because the state government had failed to give the workers any tangible offer that could make them to review the situation. The state chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, JNC, Comrade Sunday Adeleye said they will not call off the strike until the state government meet their demand to pay their five months outstanding salaries.
