Gov. Mimiko orders release of 3.4bn for striking workers in Ondo

Ondo state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has again appealed to striking workers in the state to go back to work as he proposed to pump N3.4billion to the state economy.

The governor who made the proposition in a meeting with the striking workers in the state from Grade Level 01-17 in Akure said “I have never taken their welfare for granted,” he added that the sum of N3.4bn is available on ground to be paid to workers in the state.

“N2.7bn is still sitting in the bank to be paid to Local Government workers and primary school teachers, while N700million is available to pay state workers of any sector as determined by your leaders.” he said.

Mimiko cited the fall in price of Crude Oil in the global market and level of indebtedness relative to income as factors responsible for the reduction in the state’s income to about 60-70 per cent which has relatively affected its ability to pay workers’ salaries.

Reacting, one of the workers, Michael Olorunyomi, appealed to his co-workers to call off the strike in the interest of the workers themselves and the general economy of the state. He also advised that union leaders should take the “half salary option” which he said will alleviate their plight.

The governor therefore appealed to the striking workers to go back to work adding that he will keep his vow not to retrench any worker in the state in the face of the present economic reality.
