Ecobank sacked over 1000 workers few days ago |
Ngige was responding to questions on alleged breach of his earlier directive to banks and other financial institutions to stop further retrenchment of workers pending the stakeholders meeting scheduled for next month.
The minister, who spoke after his speech to the ILO National Assembly, said: “We will go a step further if they continue. We know what to do. After all, the banks have the licenses giving by the government.
We know what to do. They need to comply. They need to come to the negotiation table. We did (halted the spate of sack to hold a stakeholders meeting) that in the oil industry and we succeeded. Even if you are going to lay off, there is a way to declare redundancy, there is a process.
Section 20 of the Labour Act says it. You must call the unions and discuss with them. You don’t just treat them as slaves in their own country and you want us to keep quiet.
“We want them to maintain the statusquo. As far as I am the minister of labour, I will protect the interest of workers; same to the telecommunication companies, they are also talking about compiling lists without discussing with anybody.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

APC government is a disgrace. Government cannot run even essential things like power Nigel and airline cos they sold. Now you want to tell private organisations how to hire and fire I their workers. All these are in the labour law.if you withdraw their licences will the government created job for the staff? If you insist on them keeping them will government be giving the organisation subventions to cover the cost of personnel? Apc government lacks the capacity to lead this country. Ordinarily the government should know what policy or policies to put in place to make businesses thrive afterall it is the apc clueless incompetent ignorance and insensitive policies that led to this terrible state of the economy. Nigerians this is the change!
ReplyDeleteNonsense comment
DeleteIt's not a nonesense comment. It's very reasonable. After all, you have no comment to make. So please be quiet!
DeleteIs the Government going to be paying the Salaries of the Banks and telecoms company workers?
DeleteThe Government that cannot mange the huge resources at its disposal now wants to dictate to the only surviving sector of the economy.
I don't know what is nonsense in the comment. We tend to give everything a political colouration. If you think it is easy to set up a successful business, set up one and let the Government tell you who and who not to employ.
Someone made a sincere comment, and you are here saying stupid comment...what's your own contribution to the topic @ hand...nothing I guess, because of the emptyness of your head...govt is saying workers should not be laid off,yet there policies are rubbish...will you prefer a situation whereby people will work and will not get paid??rubbish...
DeleteThis apc government is a disgrace
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm.what is happening in this country with FG?how do u explain dese?FG wants to close down banks that sacked staff?who caused this to them?is it not FG herself?Nawa o.only God will help us.
ReplyDeleteDemocracy out of d window, dictatorship come in. UP BUHARIIIIIIIIIII
ReplyDeleteApc is shameless in all ramifications to threaten banks and telecom companies. The government in power now is visionless and lack economic policies that can turn the economy of this country around for good that's why most banks and telecom companies cannot pay workers salaries and still remain in business. They must down size to remain in businesss.
ReplyDeleteMumu people, banks sack few workers, you want to close them down. Tell me, who then sack the most?
ReplyDeleteShameless and clueless FG
ReplyDeleteFools nonsense comments from block head peoples thunder fire all of you peoples.... So you all are happy seeing does banks sacking workers because someone from your families is not involve abe
ReplyDeleteFoolish Nigerians drifted about like shaft before the wind. I bet all the comments made were from those that read headlines alone. The minister rightly pointed out similar stance taken in the oil industry and the success it recorded. The government never threatened to close down any bank or telecoms. Nigerians should learn to read, why are you so backwards? What happens to paycuts? Must staff be retrenched? Have you lowly minds read the bank's reasons for laying staff off? Did you know top on the list is KPI, followed by economic downturn. Have those making unfounded comments on this platform ask if truly Nigerian banks have been engaging in real core banking other than survive with looted funds? Now the government is issuing its own directive as is responsible and you're here making Indian hemp realted comments. Whose interest is the government protecting from the capitalists, are they not Nigerians? Meanwhile, the minister made the comments while responding to questions from journalists.
ReplyDeleteMy friend get out of here...look at the foolish comment you are making...what happens to pay cut indeed....will pay cut increase output??look at how you are begging the issue...the policies of this govt is purely rubbish, that is why businesses are suffering now,it's as simple as that...those banks have operated all along, your govt took over power, just in 1year,there is already trouble everywhere...oga blind supporter, keep supporting rubbish, you even look like a shrine,so am not even surprised...
DeleteWhat a daft government. Do they think it is the 80s during the military? How did we end up in the mess? Please please divide this country to regions so merit and competency can rain and regions can develop at their own pace.
ReplyDeleteMost Nigerians acts like educated illiterate....pls read the post very well...he did not say he was going to close down banks....according to the labour act before a company will sack workers, they must first of all have a stake holders meeting to discuss the issue....Nigerians are use to the status quo of corruption....when a government is trying to do something different...some are now seeing as a bad government...these banks refuse to go into real business that will fetch them good money rather they depend on corrupt politicians who statch huge amount of public funds in the bank to do business...e.g Oceanic bank was a major culprit with the help of Cecelia Ibru....now that the govt is clamping down on these politicians and no stolen money available to the banks, they are now using it to face the workers...if I may ask, what has NLS done as a body towards the high level of retrenchment in banks? Now the govt wants to act most of you are complaining.
ReplyDeleteThe truth is he can not close down banks for taking who they can pay...How many jobs have buhari protected in d past
DeleteHow many has he also created...that is another pertinent question...
DeleteThe question you should ask yourself is 'Why do they want to sack people?'
ReplyDeleteThe way the Government runs her business is crippling everything. You will be the first to cry if banks and telecoms cannot run their generators and deliver their service
Hmmmmmmmm
ReplyDeleteIf the economy is booming and government had made some favorable policies, no bank or oil company will go sacking workers. The truth is that the government actions and inactions have brought so much hardship to Nigerians. Though government may regulate the sectors involved however but cannot stop banks from sacking worker when such banks are making profit and heading to bankruptcy.
ReplyDeleteMy advice to the government is to stop threats and device means of creating more jobs in the labour market by providing a favourable environment to can foster the growth of industries in the country through the implementation of good economic policies.
