Euro 2016 match preview: Slovakia vs England

Victories for England and Slovakia in their second group game have put both nations on course for qualification.

England need a point to be certain of a place in the last 16, while a win would mean they top the group.

In that event they would meet a third-placed side in the last 16, with that match set to take place on Saturday at the Parc des Princes in Paris, 34 miles from their Chantilly base.

"The important thing is to be in the last 16," Hodgson said. "We would like to win the group. If that means Paris, that's good, but all the venues are fine, so we don't want to win the group necessarily because it's Paris and it's a little bit closer to our base camp.

"We really want to win the group because it means we'll play against a third-placed team rather than playing a second- or first-placed team.

"Our motivation to win is there for all to see."

GROUP B PERMUTATIONS

England will top Group B if they win - or if they draw and Wales fail to win.

Defeat for England would see them slip to third if Wales win.

Slovakia will finish top if they defeat England and Wales fail to beat Russia. The Slovaks will finish above Wales if they better their result.

TEAM NEWS

Wayne Rooney is one of six players reportedly set to be rested by England boss Roy Hodgson for their final group game against Slovakia on Monday.

Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are also expected to be named on the bench.

Daniel Sturridge, Jamie Vardy, Jordan Henderson, Jack Wilshere, Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand are in line to start as England aim to top Group B.

Slovakia could be unchanged following their win over Russia.

But they have six players on yellow cards, including Martin Skrtel, and another booking would see them banned from a potential last-16 match.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

  • England have won all three of their previous meetings with Slovakia, including both games in qualifying for Euro 2004
  • They won 4-0 when the two nations last met, a friendly in 2009. Wayne Rooney scored twice in that game, his 20th and 21st goals for England - he now has a record 52 goals for his country
  • Seven of England's eight goals against Slovakia have been scored after the 60th minute

Slovakia

  • Slovakia have never kept a clean sheet in six previous games at a major tournament
  • Only one of those games ended in a draw, 1-1 v New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup
  • Marek Hamsik has been directly involved in four goals in his past three competitive games with Slovakia (three goals, one assist)
  • Twenty of Slovakia's 22 attempts at Euro 2016 have seen Hamsik, Vladimir Weiss or Robert Mak involved, either as the shot taker or assist provider

England

  • England's only previous game at Saint-Etienne's Geoffroy Guichard Stadium was in the last 16 of the 1998 World Cup against Argentina. They drew 2-2 but lost 4-3 on penalties
  • The game is infamous for David Beckham's red card after kicking out at Diego Simeone, now Atletico Madrid coach
  • Excluding penalties, England are unbeaten in their last nine games at the Euros (W5, D4), since a 2-1 loss to France at Euro 2004
  • They scored two goals through their substitutes against Wales (Vardy and Sturridge); their subs had scored only four goals in their 90 previous games at major tournaments
  • Jamie Vardy is England's top scorer in 2016 with four goals in five games

Possible line-ups

Slovakia: Kozáčik; Pekarík, Škrtel, Ďurica, Hubočan; Pečovský, Kucka; Mak, Hamšík, Weiss; Nemec.

England: Hart; Clyne, Cahill, Smalling, Bertrand; Henderson, Dier, Wilshere; Lallana, Vardy, Sturridge.
