EFCC freezes Governor Fayose’s personal account........... 'it is criminal, illegal' - Fayose fumes

The personal account of the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose and that of his associates have been frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Fayose Speaking at the premises of Zenith Bank, Ado-Ekiti, where he had his personal account, the governor claimed that he had gotten winds of plans by the Presidency to freeze his account some days earlier.

A source at the Bank told the visibly surprised Governor Fayose that his account was allegedly frozen on the order of the anti-graft agency.

The Governor said, he had earlier issued a counter-cheque to make withdrawal and was rejected by the bank located at Onigari , GRA in Ado Ekiti, describing the action as criminal and illegal.

Citing Section 308 of the 1999 constitution, Fayose said he enjoys immunity as a sitting governor , urging the federal government to fight corruption within the ambit of the law.

“Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution gives me immunity just like the President. I wouldn’t know why these people are intolerant of others and in a haste. Let them wait till 2018 when I will end my tenure for them to do their investigati‎on. The other time the EFCC accused me of embezzling N1.2 billion poultry project fund, I was the one who voluntarily reported myself to the EFCC.

“It was ‎when I got a hint of their move that I wrote a cheque to withdraw some money from the account and I came myself. I was denied access to the account as I was told the EFCC has placed restriction on it. That is executive rascality taken too far. Even when I had case with EFCC my properties were not affected.

“If they say they are investigating money spent on election, does it mean it is only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that spent money on election? A lot of people and groups supported my campaign then.

“Where did APC and their leaders get the money they spent on 2015 general elections from? Now it is only in PDP that they find thieves, to them there are no theieves in the APC.

“Even the President cannot claim to be an angel. The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted over the Halliburton Scandal. When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialize the judgment for people to see and read.

“We will not allow this and we will defend our rights within the law of the land. Those who th‎ink they can silence me are mistaken. I am a person who is not perturbed by things like this.

“Let them wait till 2018 when I will finish my term and I will be the one to go and meet them. I won’t run away and let them investigate the whole world, I have nothing to hide or fear,” he said.

Fayose who vowed to challenge the action appropriately.

Fayose’s personal account was frozen following clues on alleged “suspicious lodgments”, a top official of the anti-graft agency said last night.

The agency said the action was part of an ongoing investigation, adding that governors have no immunity against investigation.

Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution only confers immunity on governors and some public officers against prosecution, the official added.

Although there were allegations that the frozen cash was about N1.3billion, the EFCC said it might released the figure today as part of its findings.

EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren told NE last night that Fayose cannot stop the anti-graft commission from doing its job.

Uwujaren said: “It is true that we have frozen Governor Fayose’s acount in connection with an ongoing investigation. We will soon release the details of our findings to the public.

“We froze the account because Fayose has no immunity against investigation.

“Let me clarify that the 1999 Constitution does not grant immunity to governors or public officers against investigation.

“The governors and others enjoying the immunity clause in Section 308 cannot be prosecuted. Therefore, Fayose cannot stop EFCC from doing its job.”

Asked if the amount in the Post No Bill ( PNB ) account was up to N1.3billion as being speculated, Uwujaren said: “Certainly, some amount was frozen in Fayose’s account but I cannot say the exact amount till tomorrow (today).”

A top official, who spoke in confidence, said: “It became necessary to freeze the account following clues on alleged suspicious lodgments.

“We will release the facts soon to Nigerians to appreciate the extent of our investigation.”

Fayose accused the EFCC of intimidating him and vowed not to succumb.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary Idowu Adelusi and a broadcast relayed on the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES) yesterday announced the freezing of the governor’s account.

The governor, who accused the President Muhammadu Buhari administration of running a “selective anti-corruption crusade”, alleged that the accounts of his political associates and followers were also frozen by the EFCC. But he did not give their names and details.

He also claimed that he was not informed that he had committed any offence before his account was frozen.

The governor accused some leaders of the APC and a prominent lawyer from the state of being behind the action.

    1. Why are you so mean not to understand what is happening before you comment. What has PDP has to do with a governors personal account? Of all 35 states governor only Fayose they deem fit to freeze his account. You read what he said about Buhari wife and you did not see anything wrong with that abi? Bunch of ignorant.

    2. Prince Ebose,
Let EFCC do their work. They cannot freeze an account that has nothing incriminating. We do not need to touch 35 Governors one time. He who is caught is the thief. No need to cry much. Let Fayose order his own EFCC to unfreeze the accounts.

    1. Is Fayose, the only Governor that has "insulted" the President in the history of Nigeria. That he stands bold to voice out against the damages done to the Nation, is that INSULT? Count your Teeth with your Tongue oo

    2. Did they not insult Jonathan? Did Jonathan send EFCC against his political opponents? I fear EFCC is fast becoming a Secret Police used by Dictators to silence the opposition. This is only a year, by the time this regime morphs fully, you will regret the day you voted for them. Court orders are disobeyed, opponents are clamped in detention whether or not they are granted bail, opposition news agencies are ostracized, anyone who talks against the president is investigated and picked up, the President inspects a ceremonial military guard of honour each time he travels and comes back home, as if he's a foreign guest, These are the beginning and marked trait of a brewing dictatorship.

  8. Under a sane society, Fayose should have resigned or been forcefully removed following the atrocities committed to bring him back to power.
This administration has been so lenient with Fayose. By now, he should have been behind bars.
Whatever happens to Fayose, he brought upon himself.
People that talk too much like Fayose, Fani-Kayode and Oliseh Metuh are fantastically corrupt. Their gimmick is to make a lot of noise so as to gain public sympathy. At the end, they are always guilty.

  11. Well, I think I personally on my opinion will see it that Efcc is now instrument of the executive to redicule the opposition. The time will come wen we will no longer have trust in the judgment and laws of this country if this rascality is not termed.

  14. Why are you guys crying for Fayose, did you guys tell Fayose to pay Ekiti workers. Fayose said he doesn't even have money to fuel the generator in the Government house so why are you bothered about his empty bank account. You people should allow EFCC to do their job, that's why they are there. Everything thing is witch - hunting to you, let me tell you if you make yourself a witch, witch hunters will hunt you down bear that in mind. You people should stop supporting bad things in politics. Immunity of Governor and President has limits, check the 1999 constitution. Try and know what their immunity is talking about before comments. EFCC has a reason for doing what they did so wait and know their reason before you comment.

  22. Fayosi has always known the walls would be closing in on him, that is why he has been making noise since. I have said it severally that his noise was simply to try to garnish sympathy when the walls came tumbling down on him.

This is good for Nigeria because it is things like this that will expose all those that have plunged Nigeria to this state.

I am neither for or against Fayose, but we must remember the atrocities this man committed to get into power, slapping judges, attacking opposition etc… It is funny how the shoe is on the other foot now and he is screaming murder!

I say this is good for Nigeria.

  23. Nobody is going to sympathise with Thieves.Make more noise, nobody will listen to u.You are hiding under immunity clause and perpetrating fraudulent act,no way.You said u had no money to fuel government house generator, why then are you crying over seizure of empty bank account.EFCC,Hold his scrotum tightly, he will confess.Thieve.

  24. So EFCC has now turn to an organ to be used to fight the presidents battles and APC wars. Who ever critises the government must be silent by EFCC. What a pity, Nigeria is heading toward a dangerous road ahead. We must see beyond the trivialities. Yesterday it was Metuh, then FFK, now its FAYOSE all opposition spokesmen. There must be opposition in every sane democracy which should keep the incumbent on his toes to deliver his mandate. Nigeria is heading the way of Zimbawe where all opposition voices were decimated and the country ran aground.

    ReplyDelete
  25. APC might not be saint but it is good that they reveal the secret deal of PDP.

So, when the opposition party will come in onto power, they will also reveal APC deal and hunt them.

l think this is good and will reduce the rate of corruption by our leaders when they know that they can be hunt for by the incoming administration

    ReplyDelete
  26. You guys are really funny oh. Is this the kind of Nigeria we want? All these is just to make PDP powerless. But the fight should not be about PDP or APC, it should be about Nigeria. Guys, these people are politicians; they are playing politics. You guys should stop buying into all these crap. APC is worse than PDP. Until Ameachi, Tinubu, Fashola, Atiku, El Rufai, Okorocha, et al, are investigated and brought down, I'll never support the EFCC or Buhari in whatever they do. PERIOD!
