The National Human Rights Commission has commenced the process of collating data of missing persons since the beginning of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Thursday, the executive secretary of the commission, Ben Angwe, said the commission wants to determine the exact figure of Nigerian citizens affected by insurgency.
“Our meeting today is premised on the commission’s resolve and commitment which we all share toward assisting the efforts of Federal Government of Nigeria by providing a data bank for missing persons affected by insurgency and other criminal acts which will be helpful in tracking and documenting exact Nigerians citizens,” he said.
“From different quarters, there have been conflicting reports as to the exact figures of missing persons including those internally displaced within Nigeria and figures of Nigerian descents, seeking safety in neighboring countries, such as Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
“The time is far spent, when Nigeria should put together the data of its missing people,” Mr. Angwe, a professor, said.
Mr. Angwe called on Nigerians to come to the commission with useful information regarding missing persons from any incident of terror attack across the country.
Also speaking at the event, a representative of the Bring Back Our Girls group, Bukky Sonibare, said the collation of data of missing people means a call to responsibility for leaders at all levels.
“We have to account for all of those contained in the register, once it is developed. All lives matter,” she stated.
Some of the agencies involved in the compilation of the said data include: The National Information Technology Development Agency, the Nigeria Red Cross Association, the BBOG, The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
