Blasphemy against Islam: Igbo group questions Kano Emir’s silence

An Igbo think tank, Aka Ikenga, has questioned the silence of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, on the mob killing of Mrs. Bridget Agbahime, in the state over allegations that she had insulted Prophet Mohammed.

Describing the incident as condemnable, the group commended the actions taken so far by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State and the state police commissioner, but asked why the religious head had yet to also condemn the mob action.

The group, in a statement by its President, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, also called for the trial of those involved in Bridget’s killing.

It said, “Aka Ikenga condemns the ghastly murder of Bridget, a peaceful trader whose only offence was an altercation with another person. The mastermind of this must be used as an example so that other murders under the cover of religion will be stopped.

“We commend the Governor of Kano State, as well as the Police Commissioner for their prompt reactions. But we wonder why the Emir of Kano, whose word is religious law, has not led in this battle to stop these bigots who believe they have the divine injunction to kill in the name of God. Must the Emir wait for a national condemnation to take place as was the case in Ese Oruru before he takes actions?”

The statement described Bridget’s killing as “a premeditated action under a religious garb” and called on the government to ensure that the “mastermind of the mob action and his cohorts were charged to court promptly”.

Similarly, President Muhammadu Buhari, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, had on Saturday promised that justice would be served in the case of Bridget.

The President, while condoling with the husband of the deceased, Pastor Mike Agbahime, described the incident as sad and regrettable.
