Sunderland 3-2 Chelsea: Defoe Winner Takes Sunderland Out Of Relegation Zone

Sunderland enhanced their hopes of survival in the English Premier League with a 3-2 win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.

After a relatively quiet start to the game, The Blues took the lead in the 14th minute as Gary Cahill's deflected pass dropped to Diego Costa, who calmly slotted past Vito Manone.

The Black Cats nearly hit back in the 19th minute through Jermaine Defoe, but the striker header crashed against the woodwork with Thibaut Courtois well beaten.

Sunderland eventually drew level in the 41st minute and in spectacular fashion, courtesy of a sublime volley from Wahbi Khazri.

However, Chelsea restored their lead on the stroke of halftime as Nemanja Matic latched onto knockdown from Cesar Azpilicueta, before calmly slotting under Manone.

The hosts saw a bit more of the ball as the second half got underway, but it was the Blues who should have extended their lead after the hour-mark, as Costa fired straight at Mannone from six-yards out.

Sunderland leveled matters in the 67th minute, as Patrick Van Aanholt's cross found Fabio Borini, who fired a deflected effort into the bottom corner.

The home side then took the lead two minutes later when John Obi Mikel's poor clearance fell to Defoe, who controlled well, before volleying into the bottom corner.

Chelsea pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages , but Same Allardyce's charges managed hold out for the win, while Chelsea had John Terry sent off in stoppage time for a second bookable offence.

The victory moves Sunderland out of the bottom three with two games remaining in the season.
