Norwich City 0-1 Manchester United: Mata Goal Helps United Keep Top Four Hopes Alive

Manchester United recorded a 1-0 win over relegation strugglers Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Victory for United ensures they keep the pressure on rivals Manchester City in fourth spot, with now just one point separating the two sides. On the other end, Norwich remain two points off safety.

The first half was largely uneventful with the best chance coming to Chris Smalling who headed Juan Mata's 28th minute corner over the bar.

Matteo Darmian was stretchered off within 15 minutes after being on the receiving end of a heavy tackle and was replaced by Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.

Norwich's Cameron Jerome had a penalty shout just before half time after darting past Marcos Rojo inside the box, but it was rightly refused by referee Craig Pawson.

After the break, it was more of the same from both sides. Manchester United continued their laboured passing while the Canaries saw a couple more half-chances go wide.

However, United eventually broke the deadlock in the 71st minute thanks to Juan Mata's left-footed finish. A long ball over the top found Wayne Rooney who offloaded to the Spain international to slot home inside the Norwich penalty area.

Jerome tried to hit back two minutes later for the Canaries, but his headed attempt off a long freekick was again off-target.
