Some angry protesters on Wednesday physically assaulted a human rights activist, Mr. Amitolu Shitu, during the protest against fuel price hike organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
Members of the NLC, Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo Univetsity, Ile Ife, OAU students and few lecturers from some tertiary institutions from the state had blocked the popular Olaiya Junction as early as 8am.
The protesters, who condemned the hike in the price of fuel said they would continue with the strike until the Federal Government revert back to the old price of N86.50 per litre.
The NLC chairman in the state, Mr. Jacob Adekomi and ASUU chairman, OAU branch, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, said the strike was total and indefinite.
Shitu, who is a strong supporter of Governor Rauf Aregbesola was pulled down from the rostrum, to address the protesters carrying placards with various anti-government inscriptions.
Some labour leaders had addressed the protesters and Shitu also climbed the rostrum to address them but he was booed and heckled by some NLC members including some elderly ones among them.
Not satisfied with this, his attackers pushed him out of the crowd. Some NLC members and other protesters accused him of working for the state government to the detriment of the masses.
