Nigerian Players In Europe Underperformed This Season

Ex-Nigeria international Jonathan Akpoborie has expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of Nigerian players in the outgoing European football season.

For the second time in a row, the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations which comes up in Gabon next year.

Also in the Glo-CAF award, no Nigerian player made the final three shortlist, as Gabon and Dortmund forward Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang was crowned Africa Footballer of the Year.

"I have to mention only Odion Ighalo and Kelechi Iheanacho as outstanding. Alex Iwobi, towards the end of the season, has done immensely well," Akpoborie said.

"And I'm happy he (Iwobi) is developing well and is part of the Nigeria senior national team.

"Apart from these three, it has not been a very good season for Nigerian players especially for players like Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike."

Akpoborie, who played most of his professional football in the German Bundesliga, however expressed hope that there will be a change of fortunes in the upcoming season.

"The season is about to round off, we missed out on qualifying for the Cup of Nations but we hope the new season will bring better things for them," he added.
