Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has withdrawn the French Open due to a wrist injury.
It is the latest in a long line of injury setbacks for the current world number five, who has suffered from chronic knee and back complaints in recent seasons.
Victory in Monte Carlo and Barcelona tournaments this year suggested he had put these fitness troubles behind him as he looked ahead to a summer of Grand Slam competition.
‘Yesterday I played with an injection,’ the 29-year-old told a news conference on Friday.
‘Yesterday evening I started to feel more and more pain and today I felt I could not move my wrist.’
‘Nine times in my career I have been able to be healthy here in Paris and win this tournament,’ Nadal said.
‘This is a tough moment and the toughest press conference I have ever had to give but it’s not the end.’
It is as yet unknown how the injury will affect his preparation for the Wimbledon Championships.
The 29-year-old is widely regarded as one of the greatest clay-court players of all time, having won Roland Garros a record nine times, most recently in 2014.
